POWELL'S STATE DEPT. ISSUES ULTIMATUM TO FRANCE!!!!!!!!!!
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1520&ncid=1520&e=1&u=/afp/20030822/pl_afp/iraq_us_un_030822162618

Convinced that the bombing of UN headquarters in Baghdad this week has fundamentally altered debate over the conflict, Washington intends to force the bitterly divided council to rise up and support the United Nations (news - web sites) which is still reeling from the attack, the worst in its history, the officials said.

"We think we have an environment to do this now and we think that anyone that would want to stand in the way of the reconstruction of Iraq and stand in the way of supporting the Iraqi people and the United Nations should be held to account," a senior State Department official said.

"This is not the time for a sterile debate on rights and responsibilities but a time to stand up for the international community," the official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

1. all these quotes make LIHOP look not out of the question
"What we're saying is that times are different now," said one official. "Whether you were for the war or against it, you were appalled by the destruction. We think it's going to be hard to say 'no' to Kofi and Colin."

4. This is just crap
If the time for a sterile debate over rights and responsibilities were over, Powell would be saying that the US was willing to put its troops under UN command and hand over administrative control of the occupation.

14. Yep! This statement by Colonic Bowel says
that this attack was done by those who wanted to coerce the international community to bailing out the US, ie. the BFEE/CIA.

FUCK THE BFEE!! Let their asses cook in this hell they have created.

2. "But the resolutely neutral Annan,

who looked askance at the war, has shown little confidence a new resolution will succeed unless the United States eases its opposition to ceding any control over the security operation."

Well I can understand that--I remember the last time I saw Annan showing little confidence in the U.S...

3. Unbelievable
Powell, et al. thumbs their nose at the UN community who did not want to have this war because the inspections were working, there weren't the 9/11 source of terror, and Iraq didn't have WMD just as the UN predicted. Now they have the gall to demand UN cooperation in light of the bombing by the terrorism unleasehed by US occupation?

OK, maybe the US should be held accountable for their actions there...love the anonymous person who wants the rest of the world to stand up for the international community.

This administration's hypocrisy knows no bounds. Did they say this without cracking a smile?

6. Sure, France generating some 80% of their grid from nukes...
my sense is that "our" oil-guys (here read: Texas fill-in-the-blank energy companies) will eventually be holding France's yellowcake hostage as well ~ but it will all be centered around this 'war on terrorism thing'

8. Doesn't this UN bombing sound alot like 9/11 Lihop?
You know, a desparate Bush Admin. needs something to scare/shock people into giving them what they want. In the case of the UN, it is Chalabi coming out and saying they had warnings, and the UN saying they knew nothing. And of course, the Bushistas immediately pounce and try to use the situation to get other nations, through the UN, to bail their sorry asses out of the Iraq disaster.

As for 9/11, the same thing, plenty of warnings go unrelayed to people who should have been warned (Pilot's Union, Flight Attendants Union, baggage screeners, airport security), and the Bushies immediately getting the blessing from a scared/shocked world to do what they intended from the start.

Hey, it worked the first time.

9. The mess the U.S.A left in Afghanistan is now duplicated in Iraq
Is it supposed to be the job of the international community to follow the U.S.A. around and clean up their mess ad nauseum?...Nobody WANTED this lousy war, except George and his boys....They're all swimming in money....maybe they could pool their rescources and pay for what has to be done to mend things.==> sarcasm

10. This quote is a dead giveaway
"We think we have an environment to do this now and we think that anyone that would want to stand in the way of the reconstruction of Iraq and stand in the way of supporting the Iraqi people and the United Nations should be held to account," a senior State Department official said.

Sounds like they planned to create said environment, and now that they have it, they can get what they want.

11. Once again, over the bodies of the innocent dead...
Bush and company try to push their agenda on the world.
Don't forget, Bush wants a Un force in there so the rest of the world can die with the American troops, but Bush won't relinquish one oil well or ounce of power over Iraq's control!

12. Try "so the rest of the world can die INSTEAD of the American troops."
In *'s perfect world, the United Nations would supply all the blood on the ground while Cheney and Halliburton would drill all of the oil and keep the proceeds.

I think Karl Rove is starting to get real nervous about Iraq now that it is starting to unravel big time.

13. Stand in the way of the UN????
Wouldn't that have been the US???

This is unreal. They will stop at nothing. Threaten, bully and intimidate. That's all they know. I hope France stands up to this.
