Rightwingers going nuts about Kerry's announcement already.
MSNBC just had Dreier and Blanquita Collum on raking Kerry over the coals. They said that this stunt will invite questions about Kerry's actual service record and it won't look good. HAHAHAH

These people don't see the irony of their statements or bother to note their lack of questioning about BUSH'S service record?

18. Rep David Dreier is a Lying Sack
He honked me off one night when he was on Crossfire, hammering on that lie that the recession started during Clinton's administration.

I e-mailed his congressional website that evening, providing links to findings by the National Bureau of Economic Research that the recession began in March 2001, during Bush's administration.

A few weeks later, he was back on Crossfire, again spewing the lies about the recession beginning on the Big Dog's watch.

No good Repuke like Dreier will allow silly little facts to sway him from his assigned GOP Talking Points.

2. Yeah, Kerry's Medal of Honor will look awfully tarnished
When you put it up against President Stupidhead's AWOL!

Some people have disparaged Kerry for this little stunt, but I think that it's pretty good. The mileage he'll get out of it will offset by quite a bit any negative repercussions. If it truly bothers you, and you'd ordinarily like to support Kerry otherwise, I'd suggest you just put it behind you.

7. Kerry received Silver Star, Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts
John Kerry received these during his second tour of duty in Vietnam, when he was the CO of a fast river patrol boat. As Indiana Green (himself a US veteran) noted, Bob Kerrey, the former Senator from Nebraska, received the Medal of Honor.

8. What they're afraid of is Kerry getting the support
of the veterans and the military. Add that to the Firefighters vote and Kerry makes a serious dent in the white male vote that Bush depends on. This is a direct attack on where Bush is "perceived" to be strongest. This really is a hoot.

14. Here is the info
Kerry became even more of a press celebrity during a highly publicized "anti-war" protest when he threw medals the press reported were his over a barricade and onto the steps of the Capitol. Kerry never mentioned that the medals he so gloriously tossed were not his own. The 1988 issue of Current Biography Yearbook explained: " . . . the ones he had discarded were not his own but had belonged to another veteran who asked him to make the gesture for him. When a 'Washington Post' reporter asked Kerry about the incident, he said: 'They're my medals. I'll do what I want with them. And there shouldn't be any expectations about them.'" Kerry's medals have reappeared, today hanging in his Senate office, now that it is "politically correct" for a U.S. Senator to be portrayed as a Vietnam War hero. Alas, so much for integrity.

46. Kerry may not be my choice at this point
But your point that a symbolic gesture made almost 40 years ago somehow negates heroic acts preformed while serving honorably? Get a grip! We are to pretend that he didn’t get the medals because he was angry about the war?! He earned those honors and whether he maintained physical possession of them is entirely irrelevant to the fact that he served heroically, which is why they were awarded.

Here is hypocrisy for you, pretending to have served honorably when in fact you were getting drunk and falling down and going AWOL.

50. You tell em, Changenow
He EARNED those medals. He had the right to use them to enhance his protest ("Actions speak louder than words") And he didn't UNEARN the right to display them to make a DIFFERENT statement 40 years later.

I might prefer Kucinich now, but if Kerry ends up being our candidate, we should be ready to defend him then and should be defending him as one of OUR war heroes regardless.

Kerry should come right out and talk about Bush's (and his) priviledged upbringing and how that gave them a lot more options than most people had, and I hope he plays hardball and attacks Bush for his AWOL too. If Kerry goes on the attack on national security issues, great.

54. Kerry On Privilege And Bush
Candidate: John Kerry
Category: General Likeability
Grade: A

One of the most grating elements of American politics is the impulse for rich candidates to affect the symbolism of the middle class. (Witness the dauphin George W. Bush at his hardscrabble Texas ranch, jus' clearin' brush.) Cultural experience is of course not the sum total of anyone's character, but the impulse to obscure a privileged background for political gain is a glaring character flaw.

And in a primary where John Edwards pushes his millworker pedigree with Tourette's-like frequency, and Dick Gephardt counters that neither of his parents finished high school, the pressure for the better heeled candidates to play down their not-so-humble beginnings must be intense.

So give John Kerry credit for bucking this condescending campaign ritual. At a Mason City, Iowa, bowling alley, he framed his background in the noblest political tradition: "George Bush went to a nice, fancy high school like I did, but I came out of my fancy high school asking the question, 'Why can't everybody have a school like this?'"

That hits all the right notes--candor about inherited wealth, noblesse oblige, and a concern for the broader national interest. The media frequently invoke Kerry's Brahmin heritage to suggest that he's culturally isolated from the electorate, but the honesty and civic-mindedness Kerry displayed yesterday are quintessentially American cultural virtues.

No guts no glory. Kerry's going to win a lot of respect if he pulls this off. It's bold and shows courage.

As I see it, the Dems have no choice but to take risks and be bold. Bush is "bold" in the sense that he has unlimited gall. There is no way to counterract that without taking risks. So far, many of the other candidates have pushed the button on Bush -- Clark too. I'm glad to see Kerry doing this. It definitely has my attention.
