White House Influenced EPA to Give Rosy Post-9/11 Air Quality Statements

WASHINGTON (AP) - At the White House's direction, the Environmental Protection Agency gave New Yorkers misleading assurances that there was no health risk from the debris-laden air after the World Trade Center collapse, according to an internal inquiry.

President Bush's senior environmental adviser on Friday defended the White House involvement, saying it was justified by national security.

The White House "convinced EPA to add reassuring statements and delete cautionary ones" by having the National Security Council control EPA communications in the wake of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, according to a report issued late Thursday by EPA Inspector General Nikki L. Tinsley.

"When EPA made a Sept. 18 announcement that the air was 'safe' to breathe, the agency did not have sufficient data and analyses to make the statement," the report says, adding that the EPA had yet to adequately monitor air quality for contaminants such as PCBs, soot and dioxin.

1. "it was justified by national security. " WTF?
um, ok, do I have this straight? Telling us that poisonous substances in the air are safe, when they are not, makes us safer?

perhaps I'll bash my head against a brick wall a few times, and it will start to make sense?

15. What's a few BLUE Yorkers?
Had to get the NYSE up and running again.
And if some blue-staters have to choke on it, overall it's still worth it, as far as he's concerned.

Jeez, you make it sound like the Heartland was at stake!

2. You know, shit like this used to shock and upset me
But now I actually have come to expect it.

We need to get these sick, lying assholes out of the White House ASAP.

What really bothers me is to see some smirking facist conservative discuss how great it is to have a President of honesty and integrity.

3. I am really pissed! Look at this
snip

"The White House was involved in making sure that we were getting the most accurate information that was real, on a wide range of activities. That included the NSC - this was a major terrorist incident," Connaughton said.

"In the back and forth during that very intense period of time," he added, "we were making decisions about where the information should be released, what the best way to communicate the information was, so that people could respond responsibly and so that people had a good relative sense of potential risk."

So somebody please tell me how in the world withholding information about the risks of removing dust in closed rooms was going to give people "...a good relative sense of potential risk."

This is inexcuseable. Do you understand how many people were exposed because of this negligence?

:wtf: did they think withholding this information was going to do?

aaaaarrrrgggghhhhhh!

12. yup
just walking around downtown would give you a sore throat within five minutes.

We were all exposed. The day after we had to close our windows here in Brooklyn because the wind had shifted. If we could smell it all the way over here, it had to be terrible down there.

For blocks away it smelled and it smelled for months afterward! We were all had by these bastards. I feel really sorry for the people who live right down there and had the dust all over their apartments.

7. I think what bothers me most
Is that these people seem to lie even when there isn't any reason for lieing.

There was absolutely no excuse for this, just as there wasn't ,apparently, any reason WHY they should lie.

It seems to me that this was just another attempt to control information, because, as we all know, information is power.

I've been so angry since I first read this that I had to walk arond the back yard for an hour or so just to calm down.

10. Even more detail here:
"About a month after the September 11 attacks my son and I went to Ground Zero. We saw only dense crowds of other people who couldn't see any more than we could, but something in me wanted to be there.

After about an hour of walking around the financial district we had to leave. We left not because of the crowds or the cops, but because our eyes and noses and throats were burning.

Right after September 11 an acrid, chemical smell could be detected all over lower Manhattan, as far north as Soho and Greenwich Village. This means millions of people were breathing something unnatural.

Even so, the EPA assured New Yorkers that the air in lower Manhattan was not dangerous. New Yorkers are no fools, and many people wore air filtering masks (or at least made their children wear them), but not everyone did, and who keeps a mask on 24/7?

Now we find out the EPA lied. "

14. Disgraceful
And why do I wonder whether or not in all these executive orders promulgated by the corrupt Bush administration there isn't some total immunity clause that lets everyone off the hook for any responsibility for all the illness and lingering death this suppression of information will cause?

17. They did it because of arrogance, pure and simple
The Pubs are so into covering their asses and trying to look good, they very often forget why they there in the first place. This allows questionable behavior as acceptable.

Throw those guys out.

They are into GUESSING, GROPING for answers.

Come, we look for darts
