I hate that I'm nervous about flying in a week
I haven't done it since 9/11. There was a new warning (though I'm skeptical about everything and its motive.) New products in Spetember, more motivation of terrorists after U.S. actions in Middle East. I'm even nervous about dealing with the security. What can I expect? I'm bringing my chihuahua with me and I worry for him. I told my husband that if anything happens that I want my dog to be listed as a victim too and to have my obituary mention the removal of Bush(very cool) but doesn't it suck that because Bush's numbers are plummeting I ahve to fear visiting a college friend across the country? I hate this freakin' time we live in.

1. Try to think about
all the great things you're going to do with your friend, and not your obit! I think that's where it starts.

You'll be fine. Thousands of flights everyday.

2. I am flying from Phoenix
to Dallas and then to St Louis tomorrow. I hate flying and last week when I flew out here I slept a total of ninety minutes. As a result I got a really bad migraine and was down for two days.

I hate that I must go through Texas, a state is hate, loath and despise.

Good luck on flying next week.

3. Security is a lot better.
I think that it has a much more professional look to it than it used to. I remember flying out of Kennedy before 9/11 and watching the gum chewing minimum wage "security" workers. Compared to Europe, it was a disgrace. Make sure you do all the things you are supposed to when taking your pet and wear shoes that you can just kick off. Keep your license and boarding pass available because sometimes they check it more than once.

Take lots to do on the plane and have a fun trip.

4. I tell you what I do
I am always nervous flying, but thankfully I live right under some major flight paths for Seatac airport. I see HUNDREDS of planes land safely a day. Now I multiply that by the number of airports around the country. A lot of people get alot of places every day. The odds are so heavily in your favor, that if you weren't, oh as a mayyer of fact thousands of feet up in the air in a big tin tube, you wouldn't even think about it.

5. Just be prepared for an embarrasing Special Security Search
of your bags and an extra frisk in security. I just did a four leg flight last week all over the place and it happened to me each time. I'm in middle age professional in a suit with two kids.

Must a been my Dean credit card contribution or carnivore seeing my posts on DU.

until dumbya has been replaced.

7. I will have a tough time to ever get on a plane again after Flight 587
When they can build a plane that can't have its tail, and both engines ripped off from "wake turbulence" coming from another plane flying a mile away from the one I am in I may reconsider this stance.

8. I've flown many times since then.
Safer than driving. Try to relax - it hasn't changed all that much. Little extra inspections. But I know what you mean.

9. I had a tough time with this in June when we flew from Detroit to LA
to see my baby niece. (so I had to go) I went to the doctor got 4 valium, two for out-two for back. It went a lot better than expected. It's the only way I can do it. Have a safe trip. Remember, you are STILL safer up there.

10. Ashcroft and family are flying commercial.
Remember? He's the schmuck who switched to private jets in the July before 9/11?

11. Thank you all for your posts
I guess I have to just get used to it. I'm putting everything in those clear bags for inspections and wearing slip on sandals. I'm bringing my favorite Tom Robbins book (Skinny Legs and All) which I haven't read in years so that will help. And of course my doggie will be a comfort. Thanks for the tips and the support (the fact that Asscroft is flying commercial is especially reassuring.)

P.S. F%*K Bush. It can't be said enough! :D

12. I hate to be trite and bring up statistics
But seriously,now........

The odds of you being killed on the way to the airport
are almost one hunderd times greater, yet you never ever think about the death statistics in transit on public roadways.

Oh, and stay out of the ocean then.
The odds are greater you'll be killed by a shark

Oh and don't go outside in the rain
The odds are greater you'll be struck by lightning.

I'm not helping much am I......

13. I'm supposed to fly for the first time week after next - to Dallas :(
I've never flown, and I have always been alrgiht with that. I don't like leaving the ground period, and have a claustrophobic streak as well. I had planned to never fly, telling myself I'd to drive to where I could, and maybe go by ship to Europe when I finally get to that financial plateau.

But my new job has me flying out on Sept. 7. This is the week of 9*11. And I'm gonna be flying into Dallas, of all cities, of all states. I am petrified, and I know that I could just back out at the last minute. Hell, I might just drive (19hrs. one way, according to mapquest).

I can sympathize with you. I don't know what to do myself.

15. no one will even let anyone get near the cockpit door anymore...
but i hear ya... i have managed to avoid flying ANYWHERE since 911, wasn't that hard haven't needed to go anywhere beyond 7 hours by car yet ;-)

maybe you can sleep on the flight. take something to make it easier if you have trouble.

knowing all i know i always try to remind myself that the reason why they - the neo-cons at the helm - are so cocky is because they are in controll here at home and they are KNOW there aren't any real threats here that they don't know about AND that i think they would be really dumb to do one now... not till after the ellection, then if he gets in again i will have to begin making arrangements to move.

take it easy... see how easy that was to type ;-)

peace

16. relax !
Forget the silly stories about how the "screeners" are worse than before. The fact remains that these people are disinclined to go this route again. The real checks are donw well before the metal detectors anyway.

Just check your stuff, your dog will be fine (hey, I have a dog and I understand where you're coming from, they take good care of critters).

Don't worry !
