GOP tactics are to talk louder and talk over. We need to learn it. |
|
They are easily intimidated if you do the same thing to them. Hannity, O'Reilly, they just talk talk talk. That Kerry Fitzgerald on Crossfire the other day, just talked talked talked. She did not really care if she was right, neither do Hannity or O'Reilly.
They have perfected the bully tactics. Our Democrats are totally ineffective against these tactics. We can either let them do it or we can learn to do it.
The other day with Brazille and Ann Lewis and Kelly was really really bad, with our side losing.
One of our county commissioners is just like this. I called him one day when he said we had no water problems, no shortage, don't worry about it. He started talking over me, non-stop, and I did the same and did not stop. One he stopped for a breath, I said stop using those tactics on me. Dead silence. He knew just what I meant.

That was Kelly Fitzpatrick and I thought we won that one...Fitzpatrick was reduced to mumbling about Kerry's "bounce" being a lead balloon.
The day before with Steve McMahon was awful and he was shouted over and Brazile was totally incompetent.
I think rather than shout over them, just say "Will you stop interrupting me...Can I speak now...and refusing to let them get away with it....I can't carry on a discussion if you keep interrupting me....I let you finish now let me finish...Your arguments must be weak because you won't let me finish mine..
Stuff like that...Most of all, be prepared....McMahon and Brazile weren't...I think An Lewis is a great spokesperson and always prepared...

5. Try, "Didn't your mother teach you any manners?" |
|
"In my family we were taught to NEVER interrupt someone who had the floor. Didn't your mother teach you that too? Or were you raised in a barn by the pigs or something?"

2. DU has been used as a practice ground for that for long time |
|
:)
I've said here before that "we" need to take the domestic part of the Dept of Peace seriously, and learn good peace communication with each other, and then learn non-violent tactics for "the other side", but that never gets heard. I guess everyone thinks they have it all perfected.
So, we cleverly do it upside down.
sigh..

Not on their media outlets anyway. They have control and know what to do if you try to turn the tables.
I can agree with calling them on their behavior. But not with imitating it.

4. But they don't let our side talk, they just keep talking. |
|
How can you call them on their behavior if you are polite and don't interrupt?
You can't. If we speak softly and kindly, they just keep hollering. It is getting worse, too.

I don't think out-shouting them is the answer. but waiting for a break in the convo doesn't work either....

What did you expect from a huge multinational corporation?
I have a suggestion: Don't appear on their shows. Let them all yell at themselves. The more self-referential and loony they become, the quicker they spiral into discredit and (hopefully) dissolution. Having liberal politicians appear on Fox just raises their credibility and makes us look bad.

we need to boycott cable news, by not supporting them financially, and make it known and heard that until there is true balance and fairness, they will get no dollars from us. The only thing they worship, contrary to what they would have you believe, is money, it s their true golden calf.
And demand that Air America gets on the dial somewhere in every town and city.

8. That's only half of it... |
|
Talking loud and talking over. That's not all of it. What they say in the process is even more important. They lie, then smear. They lie about the topic, then smear the the opponent or the sources the opponent uses. That way, the opponent must spend time trying to correct the lie or defend the smear and the rightard simply bellows onto another subject leaving the opponent behind.
So, how do you plan to counteract that? The only way to do it on the spot is to lie and smear back, which gets us nowhere.
This point is most effectively illustrated by the O'Rielly Vs. Krugman debate this weekend. The exchange regarding the transcript of Oreally's radio show and how Ojackoff smeared the cource and Krugman without ever speaking to the fact that he was caught in a lie and Krugman was unable to deflect the smear for what it is and was unable to firmly establish the exposure of oshithead's lie.
How do you talk over that?
The only way to get this done is to establish a set of debate groundrules and stick to them, then refuse to engaguge in any talkshow debate outside of those rules. What rules? Well I am sure we could sit here for days and bullshit endlessly and fruitlessly on the topic, or someone with a connection could seek out a debate expert who could pull up some set of rules from some classic age of discourse, something with major history behind it, something old, so that there can be no crying from the unwashed, uneducated, uncivilized right about them.
Excuse me for a moment. GODDAMN MOTHERFUCKING GODDAMN BASTARDS MOTHERFUCKING GODDAMN RIGHT WING NEANDERHAL FASCISHT STEALING LYING MOTHERFUCKING GODDAMN MOTHERFUCKERS!!!
Sorry. I am just so angry at the liars.
Anyway, this set of rules would be presented to ALL talk show whores. Then, all dems and leftys must agree not to go on any show with a history of allowing bellowing contests unless they comform to the rules. Whining? Oh my god it will deafen your hearing. But, after a while, it will make a huge impact.
Civilized discourse with factual basis. No insults or bullying. If this situation with what Tom Leykis described on Tina Brown with Howard Dean as the tendency of corporate media's presentation of "heat, not light" for profit's sake is going to change, we must change it. And, it must be a sudden and powerful method to be taken seriously.
My plan would force the rightards into a position of having to defend lying. Heh heh heh.

11. I think you have a good plan..... it's certainly what I would do. |
|
However, when Dennis Kucinich refused to go on one of those shows for that same reason, he was roundly criticised, right here on DU.
It's a no-win proposition.

I agree. My rule of thumb is this: Don't start sh*t -- but don't take sh*t either. So: don't start out by interrupting them (their tactics); however, when they interrupt -- just keep talking. Just as loud and insistently as they are. And yes, when they take a breath, call them on it.
I've used this tactic to good effect. Yes it can backfire -- you have to be righteous, and have confidence and the courage of your convictions. But don't just let them get away with it. It never works with bullies -- they just take more.

15. Why aren't we talking about Bush AWOL instead of letting them take over? |

They keep on about Kerry's service, and we don't seem to be able to change the subject?
Why do we let them?

Even Carville is not effective against her. We can do that, and we have to do it or not go on Crossfire.

18. Violence and yelling only appeals to lesser intellects |
|
When you're not listening to the words then the mode of delivery is what counts to the neanderthalic segment of the populace. Clearly the GOP has studied Psych 101, and substitutes form for content. It's why they have taken away our base in the south and among most men. They posture as the strong Alpha male party.
