I have a suggestion for people with "Help me debunk...RW talking points" |
|
1) Most of the RW talking points have been debunked here at one time or another. Use the search tool to find those posts. (If you cannot use the search because you have not contributed, please do so. $5 would do it and it is an invaluable tool). 2) If you don't want to use the search, go to snopes.com first before asking here.
SORRY, BUT THERE ARE SO MANY OF THESE POSTS HERE TODAY THAT MY HEAD IS SPINNING. Especially because I see the same talking points over and over and it makes me sick of even looking at them.

2. it's not always easy to find the threads you want...have to use |
|
'just right' words or phrases.
similar to using a computer-based library card catalog

4. Your 2nd point: Snopes is great. |
|
I've found a bunch of stories that have been debunked. Or just simply googling by using a couple of the keywords.
And donating money to DU so you can use search is even better. I'll do that again once I've found a better paying job (hopefully very soon).

5. If you MUST ask for help debunking, don['t include the whole attack |
|
just give a one line summary, such as re: Kerry's medals.

6. At the very least, don't post the whole smear... |
|
... just ask if someone can debunk "the one about..."

When you get RW talking points in a mass email, hit "reply all" and loudly, but politely, demand that the sender include mainstream news links to back up all of his or her "facts." Chances are, he or she won't be able to - and thus you'll effectively debunk the email. Remember - if the sender's hardcore enough to send out RW talking points, you won't ever convince him or her. But you may sway some of the recipients.
Don't do their research work FOR THEM - let them prove their worthless talking points themselves. We have other, more important work to do - like convincing the undecided.

Copy up to a ten word sentence from the spam message. Put it in quotes on the Google search page, then click 'search'.
Amazing the things you'll find.

11. Couple more suggestions. |
|
1. Put a shortcut to snopes on your desktop. Very handy. 2. Start a "politics" file in your email program and copy-and-paste all the articles you want for future reference there. I have about 160 in mine. There's something in there to cover almost any RW BS e-mail I get now. I just "reply all", and then copy and paste the appropriate message into the body of the e-mail. Easy-peasey.

12. I would suggest not always be on the defensive.... |
|
play the game their way and be offensive and blast back a tougher question.
I've found that freeperlikes like to have you scramble about for links and sources, yada yada, but all they have to do is sit back and make you do the work. fuck 'em, they don't want to know facts anyway so don't stress yourself out about it.
who hasn't been there, done that, to no avail?

16. I get nasty real fast because most of these posts are disrupters or |
|
realize real fast that my time is better spent on other things and click on the hide this thread link.
Why would anyone ask DU to help debunking the right wing nonsense? Within minutes, anyone spending time at DU can debunk anyone on the right who are just too stupid to breathe in and out.
