Guess what is showing at the Co-Ed Theater in Brevard, NC (pop 6,789) ... |
|
Sleepy little Brevard, county seat of Transylvania County in the western mountains of North Carolina, has Fahrenheit 9/11 at the downtown Co-Ed Theater. Folks, this is big news. This is rural, conservative America. The most ubiquitous bumper-sticker in these parts is "We Still Pray". I'll try to attend a screening in the next day or so (4pm only) and report back what I find.

I was in St. George Is., FL this past weekend, on the Gulf Coast. The island is right off the coast from Apalachicola (sp?), a sleeply little town (fishing and tourism (though not the stereotypical cheesy FL kind, like PC or Daytona beach) are the main sources of income). Not sure of the local politics as I have only visited a few times, but they seem pretty "conservative" to me. Anyhow, while walking past the theater in town, I saw that F911 is coming to town later this month. My dad (who was with me) and I both agreed this is a good sign!

9. 2000 census: Apalachicola had a total population of 2,334. |

I love Apalachicola. The Gibson Inn even allows dogs! I have stayed on St. George Island, too. The western end (The Plantation?) is definitely high-roller, repub-types hiding behind their gate guard and security fences. The middle part is old-beach and the eastern end, if I remember correctly, is condo-city.
Great news though! Who would have thunk that Brevard and Apalachicola would get F-911?

We rented a home on the Plantation. High end for sure, but serenity on the beach at its best.
Good news again on the documentary coming to such a small location.

4. I know the initial release of 9/11 got lots of media oxygen, but |
|
Most of those crowds were already convinced.
I think that the real impact on the electorate will begin now as it hits rural small theaters. And then it will ripple to another audience when it's released on DVD.

5. I always thought Brevard was |

pretty sophisticated, despite where it is located, because they have a nationally know summer classical music program. But still great news.
Speaking of bumper stickers, I saw a great one the other day- Blessed are the Peacemakers.

10. Music festival: Brevard, the Tanglewood of the South! |
|
Brevard is a great little community. Especially when compared to the sterile, ultra-GOP enclaves like Cashiers and Highlands.

Hi Brevard, pretty little town in the mountains right next to Pisgah Natinal Forest...I'm going to cry now. But, great news about Farenheit 9-11. Brevard is a college town too in addition to the summer music camp mentioned.

It's a pretty big school now! Blue Devils rock...they always had a super football team, two of my nephews played on the team later after that. I can't believe how small it still is, and charming. The population seems to have doubled though. I gotta stop, I'm getting a little homesick.

My son attends the running camp at the college every summer and we take advantage of it to vacation there. It's a wonderful little town and that little movie theater is such a terrific throwback to the theaters of my childhood.
Go Brevard!
