Since when is Voting or the rights in the constitution a Privilige? |
|
I'm so sick of hearing people say this shit. VOTING is a right, it can be taken away only if you commit a felony. And the constitution is a collection of amendments that explain citizen's RIGHTS. What is wrong with people? STupid fuckers. DUckie

1. Exactly. Driving, on the other hand, is a privilege. |
|
Which should be revoked for far more Americans. At least most of the people who drive near me. Heh heh.

5. Gun ownership is a privilege. Hunting is a privilege. |
|
Not everything you want to do is a right guaranteed by the Constitution and its Amendments.

11. If it's a right, then why can 10 year olds, convicted felons, and/or |
|
adults diagnosed with a certified mental illness be denied a yellow card that permits the purchase of firearms like rifles? And why even the background check, FBI, etc. and the yellow card if there's a chance the applicant may be denied a yellow card? You don't have an unqualified right to a card that allows you to purchase certain firearms. I may concede the point if there are weapons that you can purchase without all the prerequisites.

12. so by your argument, voting is a priviledge |
|
not a right, because the first two groups you mentioned (minors and convicted felons) can't vote.

13. The age limit to vote is in the Constitution (26th Amendment) |
|
so, yes it's a right. And some states like Florida have statutes that prohibit convicted felons from voting, and they have been upheld as constitutional, also reinforcing the principle that voting is a right.
Your premise that rights are still rights even when they are legislatively curtailed is valid. Checkmate.

14. Here is what the constitution says |
|
A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

10. I have a relative who claims that helmet laws get passed because |
|
there are fewer motorcyclists than people who drive cars, and car-drivers wouldn't stand for wearing helmets. The stupidity of the argument just makes me chuckle.
BTW, the guy works for the county but votes Repub. So taxes pay his salary, but the government sucks. The cognitive dissonance must be deafening in his head.

15. Seatbelts and helmets are the same thing. |
|
Edited on Wed Aug-18-04 09:56 AM by FlaGranny
Both protect your head from hard objects. Some cyclists hate helmets, some motorists hate seatbelts. I hate it when my head hits hard objects.

visual of people driving around wearing helments.
See! I'm giggling! Well, I guess you can't see, but trust me...I am.

4. I dislike differentiating between rights and privileges |
|
The idea of "privilege" is a paternal notion. Where the "other side" goes with that argument is to conclude that if it isn't a "right" spelled out in the constitution, then you don't have it.
What fascist state does that sound like? Actually Scalia said that.
This is a nation of individuals, cooperating under the law to preserve individual freedoms and shared resources. We elect representatives to take care of the infrastructure of our lives and to deal with macro-issues of economy and international trade and domestic security.
When that "government" starts telling us that the critical component of our form of government is a "privilege" and not a right, then it is time to consider whether being American is any different than being Afghani or Iraqi or Turkmenistani.
