well--getting ratings is not as easy as it would seem. Sludge likes to post them (but usually only when Fox has done something spectacular). There is also a site called www.tvnewser.com, which often has the ratings results.

MSNBC has been a distant third in the cable news network race for a long time now--but recently have begun to come on strong to challenge CNN. Just a couple of months ago, Keith's ratings were in the .01 and .02 neighborhood. But lately, he's averaging in the .04 and .05 vicinity and some nights has done even better than that. Here's an example of the Thursday night show ratings from TVNewser, that show how MSNBC is closing in on CNN:

Thurs. Ratings: MSNBC Challenges CNN At 7 & 8pm
MSNBC beat CNN at 7pm Thursday night, and tied at 8pm. Folks in Secaucus are said to be pretty pleased by Hardball's ratings performance against CNN's 360. And look at Countdown, nipping on Paula's heels!:

7pm: Matthews 0.8 (636,000) // Cooper 0.4 (364,000)

8pm: Zahn 0.5 (486,000) // Countdown 0.5 (431,000)

9pm: King 0.9 (806,000) // Norville 0.4 (359,000)

10pm: NewsNight 0.6 (480,000) // Scarborough 0.4 (335,000)


Alas, Fox News still usually has more viewers than CNN & MSNBC combined.

9. Is Keith a liberal?

I couldn't even tell. That's a good thing. We should not be able to tell what ideology reporters subscribe to through their reporting. That is the mark of a good journalist. Although the spectrum has shifted so far to the right that anything close to center is considered "left". I hate the FOXes and the once-great CNNs, but I wouldn't want a media outlet on the far left either (unless they proclaim themselves partisian like Air America or Democracy Now). I view Keith as someone who doesn't spin either way, so I was just wondering what exactly led others to believe that he is to the left. Thanks.

11. I get the impression

he leans left. I remember the first time I was watching him he made some great cracks about Dennis Miller being a RW sellout and Jonah Goldburg being a moron (or something like that).

He takes more shots at the right than the left, but he can avoid being seen as a liberal because he mixes his own dry humor and wit. Next to Stewart his is the most entertaining news show (and it's more truthful than most of the non entertaining shows as well).
