We have nothing to fear but STUPIDITY itself |

i really think that stupidity is one of our number one enemies in today's contemporary culture. and the g.o.p. REALLY knows how to exploit this vast resource. only the severely stupid are true bush supporters, and they know it.

others are brainwashed and misinformed. You can take an intelligent person and brainwash them. I think that's what has happened. People of average intelligence are believing what cable TV news is telling them.

3. Some are just single minded |
|
Yes, some are brainwashed, others just are so scared of what is going on and so wish to have faith that they wear blinders. Yet others are so single issue (think abortion or gun control) that they will over look all else.

4. In many instances our stupidity is a self inflicted condition. |
|
Starting with my teenage daughters who are excptionally good at math and science wanting to dumb down in order not to appear to be nerds and lose their "popularity", we can move on to adults who profess ignorance of where Iraq or Iran are located mainly because this establishes their indifference to these people, we have a range of stupidity to deal with.We also have the stupidity of the people who make policies at the highest levels of our government not knowing anything about the people or the countries that are affected by their policies as in Vietnam or Iraq. And certainly we have the stupidity of a Ronald Reagan or a George W.Bush who provide tax cuts to the wealthy using a claptrap economic theory called Supply Side Economics which has been nothing but a failure wherever it has been tried.
And where do we put the stupidity of the fundamentalists amongst us who do not accept the evidence of evolution or the need to evaluate the use of stem cells to solve chronic diseases?I can go on cataloging these things till I am blue in the face. All I can say is that we face a veritable Tsunami of stupidity at all levels.

The question is "how did American become so dumb" ? or "Have we just been this dumb all along and have been succeeding due to an abundance of resources"?
Has something physical happened that is literally causing our brains to be dysfunctional? Is there some cultural movement that has developed into a mental disease of "terminal ignorance"?
I'm not trying to be funny. It appears the too many American citizens are incredibly stupid. They seem to be unable to think logically.

7. maybe not stupidity, just lack of information, time |
|
I don't really think people are getting stupider, just busier, more overwhelmed by everyday life. Think about it, in order to form an opinion, you have to become at lest somewhat informed on the subject, give it some thought, maybe even discuss the issue with others. It takes time and effort. You also have to have the tools to do these things, they are not taught anymore. It's just basically beyond most people's time and ability these days.
Yes, the GOP takes advantage of this.

10. You really do have a point. What looks like apathy may just be the |

enormous effort required to cope with the hassles of everyday life in the US.This is probably why berating our fellow citizens as stupid may well be counterproductive. Thanks for your insight.

8. One of the well known violations of the Second Law of Thermodynamics |
|
is a contraption called a Perpetual Motion Machine. In some ways the Republicans' blind allegiance to Supply Side Economics reminds me of a hustler trying to sell a Perpetual Motion Machine.Imagine being able to generate wealth without any effort at all! Just tax cuts to the wealthy would do the trick and wealth would pour from heaven and you will be blessed by the likes of Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson. In the meantime guys like Ken Lay at Enron, Ebbers at Worldcom and Kozlowski at Tyco would carry away the loot of the gullible almost like the frictional forces that make the Perpetual Motion unattainable.
May be the patron saint of a law on stupidity should be none other than our own Mark Twain:"You can never go broke underestimating the stupidity of the average American". May be I talked a little too soon.Mark Twain himself was a sucker for inventions touting perpetual motion.
