I listen to old republicans... |
|
Yet W is the only one that makes me feel ill. I used to think it was something wrong with me, but I no longer think so.

I was old enough to be politcally aware during the Reagan era - I knew he was 99% phoney and scripted but at least he wan't a nutcase like W. It's frustrating that W makes Nixon look almost GOOD!

4. Reagan was indeed a nutcase. |

Bush is running plays from Reagan's playbook. Same foriegn policy, same national defense policy, same economic policy.
Reagan was worse than Bush, Bush is doing the same things, but Bush isnt that popular. Reagan was just as much a conservative wingnut, but he had relatively large support. The Reagan revolution was never supposed to end, but a more moderate Bush Sr, followed by 8 years of Clinton made them wait, what we see now as the Bush administration is all those plans kicking back into gear.
Why do you think we are hearing missle defense crap?

5. I engage "Classic" Republicans |
|
I figure it's a great way to get them to either stay home, petition for change from within, or maybe even switch votes.
My thinking is this: A "Classic" Republican is someone who likes his money, doesn't like gummint messing with him, doesn't want to pay for services, and all that crap. These people feel frustrated for many of the same reasons we do, and it's a chance for common ground.
These people are freaked out by deficits bigger than they have ever seen before. These people are freaked out by the idea of US Soldiers dying in a country they never needed to invade. These people are freaked out by the Patriot Act creating bigger government interference than ever before.
In short, they are the liberal wing of the new Fascist-based Republican party. They have nowhere else to go, however, so they are stuck. So when I engage them, I talk about civil liberties as government interference or oversight. I talk about Tax Cuts as deficits crippling the US economy for their grandchildren. I talk about Iraq as how angry I am that someone who never got closer to Vietnam than Houston sends our sons and daughters to die for no reason.
Usually it gets nods, so then I ask if they have looked at the Libertarian or John Kerry. Either is OK with me.
The conversation puts me behind enemy lines and under their radar. Once there, these Republicans are pretty open to discussion.
My 2 cents...
