Poll question: How adamant are you about getting your own way... |
|
when it comes to policy. For example...
I would be willing to adjust my position on drilling in ANWR if it was coupled with a reinstatement and a 15% increase in CAFE standards on all vehicles, including those previously exempt, and a mandatory call for alternative fuel vehicles to make up 30% of auto manufacturing in 6 years.
OR
I would be willing to adjust my position on The Patriot Act if it was coupled with a mandatory increase in services and funding on a per capita basis and with immediate emergency funding for sudden upgrades in terror alerts.
How much would you be willing to bend on issues that are important to you, in order to achieve broader goals?

1. You need an "other" category. |
|
I can't answer your question because it depends on the issue. Most things I'll compromise on, but some are sacred.

2. Bend very little. Once you drill in AK, you can't say OOPS! |
|
I might consider some negeotation on expanding some drilling in areas they already were drilling, but no new ones!
Force their hand. If they want to work with me on allternate fuel supplies, I would be willing to maybe support som research, coubled with some decent results in 3 years.

3. Those issues have very little wiggle room. |
|
Others have more. For instance, on education, vouchers don't freak me out given their history, master contracts for teachers need reworking to weed out those who cannot do the job. But that needs to be coupled with better teacher training (yes, some need it) and much better teacher pay. On health care, single payer doesn't seem viable for American, we are just too big and too diverse. But having a way for the poorest paid and those unable to work is a must. I think everyone must be covered, everyone must pay, if at least on a sliding scale of some sort, and we could have a mix of public and private coverage with access to the system being equal. So, I don't get a private room when Jennifer Lopez gets an entire wing. I don't get the tummy tuck, when Dolly Parton gets everything done. But, if you have cancer, need a transplant, need in home care, nursing home care, you don't have to sell your home to get it, or die without it. And that goes for dental and mental health coverage. What we have is a disgrace and an embarrassment.
Sorry, I think I went off on a rant, there. :D

4. The basic rule of negotiation (for me) |
|
is that the fairest solution is the one that makes all the players equally unhappy. If any players feel that they're getting what they want that means that at least one other player, and likely more, are getting much less and will probably carry resentment forward into any future negotiations.
So, that means that I'm unlikely to hold out for my position to the bitter end. I'll bend when it seems like it's the best overall solution.
This _is_ based on an assumption of scaricity, but so far no ones convinced me that in the world of widgets and dollars scarcity isn't a valid assumption.
