They don't like him either -- I KNEW IT!!!
I just got off the phone with my mother-in-law, one of those rare moderate republicans (purely less taxes, less government, not so much on the social issues, but would still never, ever think about voting for a democrat) that us folks here at DU never seem to run into, and we were talking about having issuse with still not being able to write down "2004" instead of "2003". And I teased, "Well, maybe it's because it's an election year, maybe it's making you nervous" And she sighed heavily and replied, "I gotta tell you, sweetheart, that's pretty much a loser all the way around." I.E., whoever wins, we're fucked.

I KNEW a lot of republicans didn't like Bush! They couldn't possibly! You can only stick your fingers in your ears and scream "LA LA LALLALA LA!!!" for so long.

2. I'm afraid to ask
We have an unwritten rule to not talk about it, because they all know I'm a rabid, fire-breathing democrat. I'm assuming -- Sigh -- that they will, but It's just a little hope in my heart that a few like her will, you know, maybe, possibley, uh...stay home? Skip that box? Please?

3. I am hoping that
people like her will make a better choice in the privacy of the voting booth. Thanks for the report, I hear a lot of that around here.

7. I've heard a lot of that, lately, too. Three times in the last two days.

My kid's best friend's mom - longtime liberal married to a Republican told me yesterday evening that "well, Dave finally caved. I wouldn't have believed it." Apparently he's one of growing numbers of folks who voted for bush in 2000 and was sure it was gonna be great, and have seen him betray their trust utterly.

A decorator friend of ours said something similar when we ran into her earlier today - that her conservative parents told her they're not voting Republican this year. She said she's heard a lot of this, herself. Said she was "getting a good feeling about this year."

And an elderly neighbor to whom I gave a ride home this week brought it up, saying she was SO upset about the presidential election. Didn't like Kerry but was just so disgusted with bush she actually thought she wouldn't be able to vote for him. Cited the war - such a mess in Iraq, and so many of our young people being killed over there and so many wounded. She said she planned to vote the straight republi-CON ticket - EXCEPT likely not the presidential race. I talked up Kerry, she noted agreement with everything I said, but she just didn't like him and didn't know that he'd do anything better. Finally I suggested - "well, you could always leave that one blank..."

The really telling thing here, I think, is that I have YET to hear ANYONE who voted for the Democrats (or Gore by name) last time express the regret for having done so, and the determination not to make that mistake again. No one. But I hear a lot of it regarding georgie-poo. MANY regrets. Even my best friend, who astoundingly voted for bush last time, is disgusted now. She's one of those who feared he might be dumb as a post, but fell back on that shabby old argument - "well, at least he's surrounding himself with good/smart people." She doesn't think that anymore. And she thinks he's made a horrendous mess of Iraq.

11. Hi calimary!
I think the polls are totally off. I could be wrong but I simply do not see the level of support they reflect and if it was there I would think I would be seeing it here in Kansas. I guess we never know for sure and we can't be complacent but it just does not add up.

4. They might vote for him reluctantly, but I'll bet
they don't talk anybody else into voting for him with that kind of attitude!

5. I know republicans like that in New Hampshire..
they watch FOX news and do what most republicans do but they don't care about all the social issue stuff (ie. they don't bat an eye over my gayness), they smoke pot etc...they just carry on about liberals and big government and taxes taxes taxes taxes...

6. Yeah, that's what they're like, exactly
Salt of the earth, great people, but republicans. And they don't bat an eye about my blackness, either. Not even any of that self-conscious, "There's a black woman in my office, too", type stuff. They're really wonderful, just, you know, Republicans. Go fig.

9. Please. Like there aren't yellow dog democrats around here?
People who would vote for a democrat no matter who they are? Or what they did? I have a friend who's a couple of decades older than me who said that she voted for Jimmy Carter twice, even though she thought he was horrible as a president. What about all the people who switched from Dean/Edwards/Kucinich/Clark to Kerry without hesistation and never looked back?

A lot more people vote party line then don't. And thank God -- we still get a lot of votes in the South because of that!:-)
