If I hear Democrat used as an adjective one more time, I will scream.
But here is my new thing. I used the word Republic as an adjective and if anyone asks why, I tell them.

Sample: All you Republic people ought to wake up!

(say, don't you mean Republican?....uh, no)

1. The worst part is...
hearing Democrats refer to the "Democrat" Party. Makes me cringe.

retorts. Not all appear to be aware that this is a conscious effort by the RW to "redefine" Democrats and this bastardization of the language by the RW seems to have permeated. Seems that if one hears something stated incorrectly long enough, it must start to seem "correct" ....

But I really hate it.

2. Yup...it's extremely irritating
this goes hand in hand with their insistence that "we're a republic, not a democracy"...they're simply trying to get people to make associations...they don't want people to associate the Democrats with democracy (which has good connotations) and so they drop the "ic" and play up the "republic not democracy" schtick.
Good grammar trumps stupid political games, IMHO.

11. My mother was an English teacher, ....
Edited on Wed Sep-01-04 08:38 PM by coreystone
and, she used to become extremely upset about these things. I remember, having taken several courses at an undergraduate level from a Rhodes Scholar with a concentration in Shakespearian literature. One half of me agrees with your consternation; one half of me agrees with the Rhodes Scholar professor. He was a magnificent orator in "classroom". One of the courses, which I had the privilege to have been enrolled in, was entitled "Development of the English Language". One day he made a reference to the use of various uses of spoken words such as "ain't", and others. "Ye", is actually the "modern" version of "the".

Now! I do appreciate the concern of "spelling", as is relevant to the use of "democrat" in relation to being used as an "adjective". I do understand that when someone says, "Go to the store", that it is linguistically understood that "You" predicates the command. Is it possible that through the development, or, deterioration of our language, that "democrat" is simply a developmental aspect of the continual change, or, would you consider that a total aberation of such linguistic foundation?

Education is a wonderful entity of learning which is "proper", and which is not. Regarding our language, in attempt to "make it simple", let us not be snobs!

When I was in England in the seventies, there was a commentary on the BBC. The commentator made a comment that "giving the English language to Americans is like "giving sex to children". I remember it well! The quote is totally accurate! Not to escalate the "Brits", but, we have much to learn about linguistic snobbery.

With a sense of "humour"........

SORRY!

I needed to vent! The politics are really get'in to me!

13. It is a conscious attempt to separate "democratic" from our side.
A poster above has already pointed this out. They can't call us "democratic," just as Bush can't say that he's wrong about anything. They refuse to use the name of the party that the party itself uses. It's like calling a guy named Charlie "Chuck." It's disrespect, plain and simple.

15. No, it's not. It's a propaganda device used by Republicans
So they can emphasize the word "RAT" at the end of DemocRAT. They have even produced commercials with the word RAT highlighted within "DemocRAT" in past elections.

Any Democratic who adopts "Democrat" is accepting Republican propaganda and furthering their cause, unintentionally, of course. Personally, I think the word "Democratic" is a better, and more accurate label to use - it is the Democratic party, after all.

Democratics unite!

16. did you take the zogby poll?
One of the questions is: In which party are you either registered to vote or do you consider yourself to be a member? Democrat, Republican, Independent, Libertarian, Constitution, Green, Natural Law, Reform, Other, Not sure, Refused.

The wording bothered me.

22. Agreed. But since the party began, a member of the Democratic Party...

28. I agree. They should be corrected whenever they try to use it.
It's another nasty, mean little trick Repubes like to stick in to get their enemy pissed and throw them off balance. Unfortunatel, it too often works. But as Jon Stewart has shown: the best way to fight self-righteous derision is with ridicule.
