My position on the Iraq war is very clear. As a member of congress, I had to determine whether we were in a situation serious enough to give the president the ability to go to war, I and 70 of my fellow senators agreed that President Bush needed this power to maximize his ability to resolve this issue, and as a last resort, go to war.
The president's judgement regarding the war, like with so many other issues, was faulty. The president didn't in good faith look for a way for us to secure our safety without going to war. Instead, the president based his decisions on faulty information, without asking the correct questions, and without following the correct procedures. The rest of the world was not ready to support our war at the time, because they realized that all peaceful options had not been exhausted. Mr Bush would have served the country better had he exhausted the process with UN, and determined either that Iraq did not have weapons which could endanger our country, and if couldn't have determined that, convince the rest of the world that our cause was just, and necessary, because we couldn't take the risk. Instead the president's impatient incurious actions caused our nation to bear the unnecessary burden of invading and occupying Iraq.
We have seen President Bush flip flop on establishing the 9/11 commision, testifying before the commission, establishing the department of homeland security, and other important issues regarding the safety of our country. Unfortunately, when it came time to make the most important decision of all, the President was stubborn and unlearned, and led us to bear a burden we should not be bearing alone.
As president, I promise you an administration that takes the time and effort to work hard to determine the right course of action before we undertake grave tasks. I promise we will not flip flop like the Bush administration on issues of grave importance like the establishment of a department of homeland security, or the 9/11 commission. We will be an administration that values the truth and wisdom. We will not squander the greatness of this nation.
