The Upside Down People.
That's what I'm gonna call them from now on. We are a nation where a huge swath of the population, the people whose convention we just witnessed, see things upside down. There's no other explanation for it, and it's really that simple.
It's not a judgment call. (That's what they do. Most of their judgments are upside down.) It's not good/bad. It's clarity vs. muddy-headed topsy-turviness.
The guy who avoided Vietnam by getting a cushy Guard spot and then doesn't show up essentially calls the guy who volunteered and got shot at while saving someone's life a girlie-man. That's the obvious one. Only an upside down thinking person could POSSIBLY fall for this crap!
The people in the middle of the country and the middle of the road who support this corporate authoritarian regime, and then get their jobs exported overseas and their kids shipped off to Iraq, while ever larger profits go to the richest few. Upside down!
Fox is one of my favorites in the upside down scam. All of their sitcoms are about dysfunctional families of one flavor or another. They get us to either laugh at ourselves, or laugh the "other." Then when we're feeling nasty and superior, show us all the wonderful things we should buy to make ourselves feel better. Upside down. And all those "Reality" shows are even more disgusting. Upside down AND inside out. When they've got you where they want you, they present "The News" which is all kinds of upside down. There's no way to be sure what to believe!
Of course upside downism isn't consigned only to Americans. People from everywhere run the risk of suffering from upside downism. Certainly the Islamic Fundie terrorist upside downers are a clear example, but they are no better or worse than our very own Christian Fundie upside downers. They're opposite sides of the same deranged coin. And the funny part is that they see each OTHER as enemies when they are clearly identical twins separated at birth. (Isaac and Ishmael?) I really do want them to destroy each other, the only problem is that they're gonna make DAMN sure that they take all the rest of us with them!
The Upside Down People. Have pity on them and try to educate them. They are not beyond hope, though they may be beyond help. They are merely tools and don't know it. Remember that they are often our brothers and cousins, sisters and parents. Most importantly, recognise this upside downism and don't let it fool YOU and seduce YOU. You'll feel much better about yourself if you manage to achieve clarity...
