Job creation - Bush vs Clinton
Got little response in Campaign 2004, so I'll try again here...

But, I wanted to respond to a Freeper type who was orgasming over Bush creating 1.7 million jobs in the past year.

My responses were going to be as follows:
1) In order for the economy to meet the employment needs of a growing population entering the workforce, we need to create at least 150,000 jobs per month just to stay even. That is 1.8 million in a year, which means Bush has technically lost 100,000 jobs in the past year. what is the source of 150K per month? 1.7 million jobs in 12 months also brings him to a net loss of 1.3 million for his term to date. For 3.5 years of his presidency, he should created 6.3 million (42 months x 150,000 per month) jobs just to stay even with the population growth. So, he is technically at a job deficit of 7.6 million over his presidency.

2) Bill Clinton created over 22 million new jobs in 8 years, or about 230,000 per month for the course of his presidency. So, even an average year under Clinton, he still created 2.76 million jobs, or more than 1 million more than Bush. Freeper claims job losses started under Clinton, but I don't think so. Any stats on this? The BLS website seems pretty Byzantine to me

Thanks!

1. The reality is that republican presidents are always bad for job creation.
Poor job creation numbers are typical for republican presidents. Republican presidents are always, always, always bad for job creation. Since the 1920's, the annual rate of job creation under republican presidents has always been lower than under democratic presidents.

Since the depression, not a single republican president has had a better rate of job creation than any democratic president. The highest rate of job growth under a republican was 2.2% per year during Nixon's time in office. The lowest rate of job growth under a democrat was 2.3% per year during Kennedy's time in office. Bush will have the first negative number since the depression.

Since WWII ended, a total of 57.51 million jobs were created during the terms of democratic presidents which is an average of 2.054 million jobs per year. During the terms of republican presidents a total of 31.11 million jobs were created which is an average of 1.003 million jobs per year.

You can not have cheap labor in a strong job market. And nothing is more republican than cheap labor.

The numbers in this chart are from July, 2003 so they do not include the jobs created in the last 13 months, but the pattern is unchanged by those jobs.

4. I never have understood why democrats don't use these numbers.
The chart appeared in a New York Times article a little over a year ago. I think it is persuasive as hell. But I never hear any discussion of the job creation numbers over time.

6. and, don't forget China
After calling them a strategic competitor early on, he certainly seems to love to create Chinese jobs... maybe so his brother can more easily get some Chinese hookers?
