1. It's the "safe thrid country" agreement
Canada will take political refugees from every country in the world except the USA in an agreement from late 2002.

2. There isn't one
"Canada accepts more legal immigrants relative to its population than any country on Earth.

In the past two years, almost half a million immigrants arrived, a shade less than half of them in one city alone -- Toronto. The largest numbers for the country as a whole, amounting to almost 40 per cent of the total, came from China, India, Pakistan and the Philippines.

The federal government, responsible for immigration targets, heralds these waves on humanitarian and economic grounds, the argument being that immigration shows Canada as a caring country whose new arrivals will fuel future economic growth."

We have two Americans here now, seeking status in court, that left because of the Iraq war.

4. Yeah, we're keeping an eye on it
Canada and the US have never taken each others 'political refugees'...since they were deemed not to exist...but just as Trudeau let in the 60s draft dodgers, look to our new PM Martin to do it openly too.

Meantime we have 'underground' movements that bring Americans into the country quietly.

19. From what I understand...
His point is, to re-institute the draft so as all sectors of American society has to serve and make a sacrifice, not just the poor or the minorities. This is so all Americans have a vested interest in what decisions are made in the white house.
So it's not, "I know the son of a friend who's actually my 3rd cousin once removed on my mothers side, but he's really not a direct relation, that is serving over there."

20. I can understand that...
... and wouldn't even be opposed to a universal service commitment as it can serve as additional skills training past high school. but if Kerry campaign keeps yelling, "DRAFT! DRAFT! DRAFT!", then this could backfire as the legislation was introduced and sponsored by fellow democrats.

http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2004/09/08/draft_dogers040908.html

B.C. activists plan to erect a bronze sculpture honouring draft dodgers, four decades after Americans opposed to the Vietnam War sought refuge in Canada.

22. I understand there is a treaty from 2001-2002...
Where the US will request that Canada return any person seeking asylum that the US declares to be a "Person of Interest".

Connected to the PATRIOT act...
Betcha Arschloch would want to see each and every "interesting" draft resistor as they are returned...
