just heard on Ed Shultz show from a caller from North Carolina.

1. Did the caller make it seem like a surprise dispatch?
or part of a planned rotation? Hmmmm.

2. He said it was an 18-hour notice kind of thing.
He said it was a pretty big mobilization, at
least a company.

3. Yes.... and no. They're on 18 hour notice.
There's a difference between that on being "on the way". But yes, I agree, they're the ramp-up for the October surprise.

Calling my brothers (101st Airborne and 3rd Marine Div) now to get their current orders. My 3rd Mar Div brother has been on 72 hour notice for Afghanistan for 3 months.

82nd Airborne Sending Battalion to Afghanistan

By The Associated Press(09/17/04 - FT BRAGG) — A battalion of the 82nd Airborne Division was told Friday to get ready for rapid deployment to Afghanistan to provide security for the Oct. 9 elections while a larger force of paratroopers still prepares for a spring deployment.

The unit would number between 500 and 1,500 paratroopers and leave Fort Bragg within a week, officials said.

"They're saying it's going to be a short deployment," said division spokesman Pfc. Marshall Pesta. Paratroopers from 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment are on quick recall status, required to be ready to return to base in two hours.
