Rather did the right thing as it stands at this point |
|
Edited on Mon Sep-20-04 06:06 PM by rainy
in my opinion. He let Burkett say he mislead, Burkett blamed CBS, nothing else was said and Rather went on to report the news as if his career was not on the line. And, well, it should not be. This, I think will only come up again on CBS when they are certain of the rest of the story. Who really forged the papers or who really supplied them in the first place. The goal I believe is to let it go without anymore said until they can pin it on that freeper guy with big connections to high ups in the admin. and repub party. And, possibly trace it to Rove. Thoughts please.

I applaud Rather's efforts, but i don't doubt that this was "pre-arranged" to make Rather look like a fool, to hide other issues and announcements, ( not that this admin's left hand tells the right what it's doing - forget telling "The People") and to give all the good little Freeptard Fascist Flaming Lips something meaningless to blather on about on their talk shows. What good can they say about Bush* today? They HAVE to manufacture a new enemy...
All the Shit-For-Brains Talk Hosts were desperate for something to obsess about. This gave it to them. What the hell will they talk about now?
It's for CERTAIN it won't be anything helpful to this nation.

3. I remember the relentless Rather focused upon Richard M. Nixon |
|
when the media still had an idea of it's role in a democracy.
Now it's disinfo and bullshit 24/7.
This fact remains, there is no question where John Kerry was during his military service, there are many questions as to George W. Bush's whereabouts in the Texas Air National Guard and mysteries about his service records.
This incident raises that question for fresh analysis imo. I wish Rather could be replaced by someone like Greg Palast or Will Pitt.
It would be nice if Rather caught fire again though, regardless, he DID a great job with Nixon.

Somebody pushed the docs through too fast. They assumed the docs were real just because nobody freaked when they were presented. CBS is just trying to get away from Nipplegate.

5. While the memos authenticity can not be proven at this point |
|
Their authenticity has not been disproven, either.
My thoughts?
It was rather breathtaking to see the remarkable synchronization between parties that I'd thought were not directly party to BushCo. ABC, for example, surprised me with their intense attack on CBS right out of the gate. I knew they were Disney and very pro-corporate, but I didn't realize they'd go out of their way for the Bushes so eagerly. NPR has been highly disapointing in this regard as well.
Fact is, the entirety of the 'forgery scandal' has been hot air and spin amplified a million times. Each point the forgery argument makers brought up has been debunked time and time again. There is simply nothing in the documents presented that proves it is not authentic (although there is nothing specifically to prove they are authentic, either).
These debunked 'points' kept getting repeated in the media nonetheless, as if they were the absolute truth, as if they were simply deaf to the counter arguments. "Let's bring on another 'document expert' to vouch for our side without specifically addressing the arguments." That went on for night after night on nearly every media but CBS.
I don't know if the memos are authentic or not. I DO know, based on all the other stories that came out around this issue in the NYTimes, USA Today and Boston Globe that Bush did NOT fullfill his Guard obligations. That is very clear from the official record based on Pentagon documents. This has been publicly accessible knowledge for some time, but was not discussed again until recently, after the CBS story (though the subject had risen again prior to that).
On that regard, the loss has been Bush's. I would guarantee that more people believe Bush didn't fullfill his Guard duty now than two years ago. Those that were most certain the memos were forgeries from the start are also the ones who think Bush served all of his Guard duty, and will probably continue to do so no matter what evidence comes out. I doubt anyone who previously thought Bush skipped his duty has now decided that he DID serve it all as a result of the CBS story.

9. CBS should hire some good investigators to get to the bottom of it. |

Who knows, maybe there are some CIA or FBI guys who might want to help find the creep.

12. What we have to accept is |
|
that Republicans, truly, don't give a damn if he fulfilled his obligation. This is the party of the me-me-me's; if somebody gets ahead, regardless of the methodology, and as long as that person shares the Republican ideology, then it's admirable to them.
Just look at the Clinton era. Clinton was dogged from day one about a financial deal that actually cost him money. Bush has ON RECORD a case of insider trading against him. Not a peep from anybody about it. Why? Because he did what Repubs do: they break the rules. Bear in mind that Clinton LOST money, while Bush ended up saving A COUPLE HUNDRED THOUSAND!
Bush could walk out on the White House lawn, say, "Yep, I didn't do all my Guard service, sue me!" and the press would report on it for a while, us Dems would flip out, but Repubs? Nope. They'd be high-fiving.
