The Dean machine rolls through the Big Apple
Aug. 27, 2003 | NEW YORK -- Howard Dean's bash in Bryant Park last night makes an easy target. The New York City park was packed, but seemingly everyone there was white, under 30 and dressed for a Burlington, Vt., block party. A man selling tie-dyed shirts did brisk business, and the crowd of about 10,000 seemed oddly disconnected from the incredible mix of people and cultures walking New York's streets right nearby, many of whom must have wondered what was going on.

Save for the ubiquitous blue signs, "Howard Dean for America," it would have been hard to know that Bryant Park was hosting a presidential candidate last night and not a Hootie and the Blowfish concert.

But even bearing that in mind, it was hard to leave the speech last night without thinking: Wow, this guy can actually win.

2. hard to get Al's supporters
to openly support Dean in NY this early in the game, think about it. Dean is supported by blacks. Blacks want a fight. Dean is going to bring it.

6. one thing about this story I don't like
they highlighted that fact that the attendees were primarily white.

I don't like that -- I'm black and I think Dean has broad appeal.

11. "I am troubled by the lack of social diversity...."
From today's WP chat...

Milwaukee, Wis.: I am troubled by the lack of social diversity among the audience in the city rallies. I saw few minorities at our reception here in Milwaukee and the Times article today said that absence was the same in the other cities. Are you aware of the problem and is their some way to highlight Afro-American support by getting an endorsement or have a minority prominent in Dean's campaign?

Joe Trippi: Two things. One, when you start with seven people and $150,000 in the bank you have to keep a very small focus. You can't do too many things in that situation. We determined that we had to focus on four things - Iowa, New Hampshire, the Internet and fundraising. For the first six months of this year, that is all we had the resources to do. With the June 30th quarter surge, we have now been able to hire outreach coordinators in the African-American, Hispanic and Asian-America communities as well as others.

For example, Andy Pringle who was until recently Carol Mosley Braun's campaign manager for president, has joined our campaign. He is our deputy campaign manager and is taking on the responsibility of outreach in these communities. Congressman Major Owens endorsed us last night in New York, a key African American congressman. Many other supporters are joining. We expect you will be able to see significant progress in the next 60 days.

Another indicator that we are on the right track: at one of our rallies in Austin, Tex. several weeks ago we emailed the 481 people we knew supported us in Austin. When we got to the rally there were 3200 people there. That was because the initial email group went out and leafleted the Latino community of Austin as well as others. Of the 3200 people who showed up, nearly half were Latino and nearly two-thirds didn't own a computer. We are seeing more and more that the grassroots movement is reaching beyond the Internet. I would also say that if we are now ahead nationally, as the Zogby polls suggest, than we are probably fairing as well or better than the other major candidates in the race at this stage. It is something we continue to work on but we are making lots of progress.

19. I saw a fair amount of minorities in Falls Church, VA
Still not as many as there should have been, considering the proximity to DC, but this crowd and the crowd we had in Philadelphia a few weeks ago when he came there were a lot more diverse than previous crowds I have seen at Dean rallies and meetups. We are making progress, and it is something the campaign is aware of and working hard on.

12. I think they may be latching on to another "story" about a candidate
Edited on Wed Aug-27-03 03:57 PM by BurtWorm
the way they made Al Gore into an "exaggerator" and the way they make Bush into a "wildly popular" "president." You couldn't ask for a better myth if you were Karl Rove himself.

5. Pics from Chicago tell a different story
Although there were a lot of white faces, minority representation was definitely in evidence. Take a look for yourself.

9. Hey Proles ... this is Howard's cousin Patsy!
She's his first cousin on mom's side. Lives in my hometown (Evanston) and is an absolute hoot at the meetups. Started out a sorta starchy, sorta moderate Republican, sorta nervous gal and has loosened up to the whooping and hollering point.

10. I know
She told me that when she introduced herself after I took her picture. I just find the people who look interesting to me and ask them to pose. Small world that I would have picked her.

Sorry I missed you yesterday.

18. Yeah, right
"seemingly everyone there was white, under 30 and dressed for a Burlington, Vt., block party"
Unlike bush who draws such a diverse population, not! There was just a letter to the editor in our local paper complaining about the write up of bush's visit because it made his pre-selected audience of rich (white)republicans seem elitist (duhhh). I just don't get the hypocrisy of these 'reporters' who try to call the democrats on all the things that they don't call bush on.
