In the Bush regime, Brave New World has met Leo Strauss.
Brave New World, of course, is Aldous Huxley's vision of a future, in which people so jaded by entertainment and drugs welcome authoritarianism and are indeed repelled by anyone wanting freedom and independent thinking.Leo Strauus is the philosopher who says that the vast majority of people are incapable of self governance and should be ruled by an elite that knows the score and is entitled to tell comfortable lies to the masses to keep them in line.

When I think about our present situation, we seem to have a healthy dose of both these scenarios already in place, so in the decade ahead we can expect continuing progress on both these fronts. The inability of a population to focus on things that are in their own self interest and to put people in power who will be held accountable to deliver on issues of importance is clearly operational; the surfeit of entertainment, be it sports, movies, trivia, gossip consumes so much of our time and energy we have nothing left for matters of importance and in fact may even make us turn off from them because they require us to invest time and thinking.Of course, drinking, sex and related mind numbing paraphernalia are always at hand to provide more diversions.

Le Strauss has invaded our consciousness because of the impct the PNAC cabal has already had through its call for a 9/11 type event to transform American Democracy. That event, whether executed by them or done by foreign terrorists now is the central experience of our generation. The lies told in its aftermath and before the Iraq War are essentially Straussian in nature and so are the stonewalling tactics preventing democratic accountability.Mr.Bush has already claimed to receive his instructions from God and it will be only a matter of time before he declares the U.S. Constitution dead and no longer operative, again conforming to the Straussian belief system.

But, now like my hero Chauncey Gardner, I must return to the TV so I don't miss the morning dose of my trivia.

1. Thanks to Patriot Act I, and the provisions of Patriot Act II that have...
...ALREADY been passed through Congress as riders on other bills, the U. S. Constitution is ALREADY negated. Take a moment to read the provisions of these heinous acts and you'll see for yourself.
