Oliver North has (gasp!) played fast and loose with the truth

Oh Ollie, will you never learn?

In his current article on the Washington (gasp!) Times website, he talks about how despite all that loose talk about the military having personnel shortfalls, re-enlistments with the Marines is actually going gangbusters.

When things go badly and morale is down — so are extensions and re-enlistments. But in the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines we documented in Iraq, so many Marines have asked to stay in the service the Battalion commander, Lt. Col. P.J. Kennedy, has requested a waiver from established limits.

Then I do my best to try and refute that bit o` nonsense on my weblog. For instance, according to this USMC press release,

The Corps must re-enlist 5,703 first-termers in fiscal 2005, nearly 5 percent fewer than this year’s total. The retention goal for career Marines is 5,003, about 11 percent fewer than in fiscal 2004.

The press release also points out how the Marines are now spending more time in-country than policy used to allow. Standard wartime deployment is 6 months out of each 18 month period is to spent in the field. But for this war Marines have to spend 7 out of every 14 month period in Iraq. Why? Because it's a hell of a lot tougher to bully people into democracy when they hate you for killing their kids.

Ollie seems to have overlooked this in his insightful analysis.

During that whole Swift Boat Vet crapfest, I was, for some masochistic reason, watching Hannity and Colmes. Hannity said that atrocities never happened in Vietnam and held up North as some example of honor. All I could think was "Wait, we're supposed to take the word of a criminal?" and then I remembered, its fucking Fox "News". Still, why the fuck does this motherfucker get any airtime?

I'm so sick of his claims of how much his "fellow marines" love him and how much they all love their Commander in Chief (except when it was Clinton).
