I am trying to visualize what life would be like if we impose a |

limit on defense spending annually and cap it at say $200 B a year. If, in addition, we rescind the tax cuts Bush put in place for the wealthy, enough moneys should be freed up to pay down the deficit, fund prescription drugs for seniors and fully restore social security to solvency. After a few years, we may even be able to think about helping states improve infrastructure and attract new investment.
It seems to me that $200 B is such a large amount that we can adequately provide for our defense with it.But that would require that our politicians give up dreams of empire and become world citizens again.
Looks like I have been dreaming.Never will happen.

1. What? and risk getting called "weak on defense"? |
|
It does not matter how good a desired policy may be when it would literally destroy any politician who decides to support it. The age of fear that we live in defeats all reason and temperance.

2. The first step is either media reform or campaign finance reform. |
|
Otherwise candidates get marginalized.
