Pentagon Acknowledges Censoring Casualty Sites
<snip>

Last week, I received an email from a marine in Iraq who said his network had blocking him from visiting icasualties.org, a site that compiles casualty figures for Americans Iraq. as well as CNN’s page on servicemembers killed in the war. That was the second time I’d read of the military censoring a casualty-related site. Memoryhole.org, the site that first showed photos of flag-draped coffins being shipped back from Iraq, said in June that one of its readers had a similar experience. GIs trying to visit were greeted with:

Access Denied (content_filter_denied)

Your request was denied because of its content categorization: "Extreme;Politics/Religion"

I assumed this wasn’t policy, but rather an overzealous sys-admin with too much time on his hands. I was wrong. Two Army spokespeople have now explained to me that it is indeed the Army’s intention to purposely block service-members from viewing non-Pentagon casualty sites.

1. They really don't want us to know the true number of casualties....
...after all, the NeoCons don't want to hurt their chances in the upcoming election.

They also don't want too many young men and women to know the truth because that would probably cause a lot of folks to reconsider enlisting and/or re-enlisting. Can't have a shortage of troops when Iran is next on the list.

3. It's true, 52 US kills in just over 2 weeks. Yet no one on TV seems
care. My supervisor just got called up. 48 yrs old, kids - wife the hole bit. I'm really fucking pissed right now.

4. I predicted this...

There was always the "KIA count" issue, especially a "killed since
Mission: Accomplished" count on almost every news channel, right
up until we turned it over to the Iraqis. "Let Freedom Reign",
then, not much news about Iraq, no nightly KIA count, only brief
mention of the 1000 KIA milestone reached. Everybody KNOWS that
Iraqis are in charge of NOTHING, but yet, hurricanes and the "horse
race" always headline the news. It's just sick. I wish we had
real journalists. Not these "in Bed'ed" quislings we have now.
