I read a freepers mail a few weeks back that stated he was getting a virus from this site, I know, just another nut case. However I have noticed that I do get that alarming pop up warning me that my computer could have spy ware. That is the same pop up that I see at work a lot, I am in IT, that pop up has been associated with several viruses. DU what is the deal with that pop up? I have gotten it even when I came in here with a computer that was just built and had a clean OS install. All I use on all my machines is Fire Fox or plain Mozilla.

2. It is hugely annoying, I always close it without reading it |
|
I NEVER click on a popup ad, especially one that purposefully goes around my pop-up blocker.
Matter of fact, If I do notice what product or service is being advertised in this less-than-honest manner, I boycott said product or service.

You nailed it, this is exactly what you should do.

|
It is yellow and gives a warning that your computer may be infected with spyware and to click here to get rid of it. In my experience with that add we have noticed that if you have spyware and get that add more times then not the add is the same party responsible for the spyware. So in other words "were sorry you may be infected by us click here and well remove ourselves for just $29.99" That is why I am concerned about that add here on DU.

and have yet to see the popup. I'm not saying you're not getting it but I'm doubting it is connected to DU. Hmmm....wonder how they do that??
Edit: I'm using IE6 and have never gotten a popup here.

Sorry.
But I don't understand why you would get pop-ups. Maybe you turned off the protection in Firefox? Or your computer got infected with something else that generates the pop-ups.

15. This always seems to fall on deaf ears ... |
|
But the solution to almost all spyware, pop-up and browser hijacking problems is:
STOP USING INTERNET EXPLORER
Isn't Firefox great?
I only use Internet Explorer for a couple of sites that I have to go to that are Firefox unfriendly. And by a couple, I mean two. Firefox works for everything else.

I made the mistake of clicking it on and it screwed up my 'puter. Atleast I think that was the cause. Had to format which was completed two days ago and I am still getting it.

19. Then the problem is you. |
|
What I mean by that is, the rest of us using mozilla don't have the problem at all, never have and never do.
So, I would...
1) run ad-aware, be sure to check for ad-aware updates first in order to update the definition file. (i seriously think this is your problem) 2) run reg mechanic, or some equivalent registry cleaning program. 3) clear remaining cache, cookies, history from mozilla 4) disk-clean up temp files, temp internet files, etc. 5) open task manager make sure you don't have any suspocious processes running, if you do copy the name of the process into google and search for information on what it is and how to deal with it. 6) Run msconfig from the start menu and look at what processes are set to start up and boot up. If you see something suspicious, look it up and figure out what to do with it. 7) if nothing else, uninstall, delete and then reinstall your browser - when you reinstall, be sure to set your advanced settings option that says "allow websites to install software" to OFF

I am also in IT Support, we find in some cases this is Adware. If Spybot 1.3/with latest updates will not remove. try carefully editing the registry. Run regedit, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,SOFTWARE,Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Run. Look for any item which does not belong, copy suspected items to notepad in case you have to add them back, delete problem lines.
I would recommend running SpyBot 1.3 first, make a hard copy of any problems found, use this list to find any reference to these items in the registry. Unfortunately some of the problems we find today are not totally removed with either Microsoft Add/Remove Software or any of the Adware/popup/virus removal tools. As a result the items are added back to the registry on the next bootup.
Good Luck Elifino

I only seem to get it at this site. I just did a reg check and I came up with nothing out of the norm. I'll continue to check, I am glad it is not just me though.

Has been driving me wild. If this is the first place you've come you realize it starts RIGHT HERE, and follows you around.
Creepy. Not glad for you, but I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. Gives a little perspective to the situation.

I switched a few month back and it's great. All the functionality of IE, and even of full Outlook also if you add the calendar option.
I haven't had any pop-ups since. Many were evading my old pop-up killer.
