Very Sad week: My Boss, 48 yr old family man has been called up for Iraq!!
More than just my supervisor, this man is my friend and a fellow Dem. Last night, our dept. had a going away party for him. Not just my dept, hundreds of people from work showed up. This was a sad party. A lot of tears.

4. unbelievable. what are they going to do with a 48 year old guy in a
war?

the truck drivers are the ones that get killed.

He should refuse to go.

better safe in a jail than dead in a truck

3. My gawd, why?
Is he guard/reserve? He's pretty old. Don't get me wrong, I mean that 48 is old for guard, reserve, and active duty.

6. It's rather obvious why.
They are running out of people. Freepers better thing long and hard if they love Bush so much that they are willing to send their kids to fight in the Middle East for him.

7. 48?!?! They didn't even go that deep in WWII
There were guys towards the end well into their thirties and even some low 40's according to my Dad...but SHIT 48??

And they still claim Chimp won't re-instate the draft? Bullshit....

8. Here's a 56 year old woman just called to go....
56-Year-Old Reservist Being Called To Active Duty For First Time

LINCOLN, Neb. -- At a time when most people are looking forward to retirement, Connie Greenwood is preparing for combat. The 56-year-old Greenwood looks less a soldier and more like somebody's grandmother. And she is.

But she also holds the rank of First Sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserves as member of the 308th Transportation Company in Lincoln. Greenwood has been called to active duty for the first time in her 26 years as a reservist.

Greenwood said the timing of her first deployment could not be better. She said she would rather be called to active duty now than right before her retirement in four years.

Her family does not share her enthusiasm. Her two grown sons, Darin and Robbie, both of Seattle, were floored by the news. Her husband of one year is even looking into taking a civilian job driving trucks in Iraq to be closer to her.

9. How old is Pickles?
She's still young enough to go, isn't she? I bet even she can learn to pump gas.

10. That's not the first 50-something grandma
I saw a report several months ago about it. This is more than grotesque.

I'll tell you what I'm reminded of, tho there isn't a direct analogy. it's just a picture that keeps coming into my head as I read this thread. At Ft. Benning, Georgia, is the Infantry Museum -- or was, back in the early 70s when my first husband was stationed there going thru OCS, and we visited the museum. The ONLY thing that sticks in my mind, was a WW2 German winter uniform jacket, woven partially with straw. Their supplies of wool were short, apparently, and they improvised.

15. A 56 year old man died in Iraq who was called in from Reserve...so it's
more common than one would think. Why shouldn't Shrubby be called for active duty....oops I forgot...he didn't pass his physical so he was AWOL..I guess that disqualifies him.

13. What the fuck does the military expect a 48-year-old to do in Iraq?
Edited on Fri Sep-17-04 10:14 PM by NightTrain
Not that I'm prejudiced against older people, mind you. But I honestly can't figure out what they're going to have a 48-year-old man do in Iraq. Are they gonna make him go into combat, fer chrissake?!
