31. Republicans don't respect hard work...
Though they love to live off your hard work by screwing you out of a living wage and siphoning off your pension savings. They want to make money the easy way--with bribes, special interest laws and tax breaks, corporate crime and cronyism. They just use the suckers who fall for line of B.S.

and still a democrat to the core. Tell the teacher to leave your childs political beliefs alone. That teacher probably makes less than $30k per year - the great tax cut gave him/her about $8 extra per month.

I would tell the teacher a few more things also, but that's just me.

8. Similiar thing in college
I had a college professor like that. Apparently, he thought that all of us "kids" (the average age of people attending this college when I went there was 27) would learn about the "real world" once we stopped taking daddy and mommy's money.

You should have seen the look on his face when I raised my hand and told him that I was paying for my college (along with federal student loans), worked full-time, payed taxes, and would never vote Republican.

I'm not sure what grade the child is in, however it is extremely scary that public school teachers have no problems expressing their political views in the classroom.

20. I went to parent orientation for my son who just started college
All freshman are required to attend and there is time set up for the parents and students to meet with the students academic advisor, my son's major is history(for now), anyway he was the assistant dean of the history dept. and he was incredible. The focus of the history dept is now cultural diversity, he was telling the students that considering what is going on in the world today that we Americans have to be more aware of the cultural differences in the world and that the media and information given to the general public here in the US is very restricted and biased. I was thrilled to hear this guy speak. Lucky for my son this professor only has 12 freshman students, he will be their advisor through out the next four years unless he changes majors. There is still hope.

that students have little concept of the bite that taxes take as their incomes are low if present at all. Wasn't referring to non-students.

There is a significant difference between paying sales tax on that combo meal at McDonalds and 28% of your pay check (plus FICA of course and state maybe locality etc).

25. Ban repub teachers
There should be a litmus test that excludes all but democratic teachers.
I am all for more taxes since most of us have more than we need. If not
for taxes many of us on disability would be in rough shape. Between my
better off relatives helping me and the many tax dollars I get each
month I can live the life of most Americans.

With an increase in our meager taxes many more could have a better life.

32. A different tack
I am a substitute teacher, and I don't shy away from discussing politics in the classroom if they come up. The other day I was subbing for an 11th grade English class the assignment was making persuasive speeches. There were 3 opposed to the war on Iraq, 1 in favor. During each student's question time, I challenged all of them (except for one student who I agreed with, I threw him a softball).

I got into the one student who was pro-war because he claimed that Saddam had a chemical weapons program. I told him that he should check his sources, didn't tell him he was wrong though. I spoke with him after all the speeches were over during the 10 minutes of goofing off before the bell rang (out of a 1 1/2 hour class period). I said, hey, I think you got your facts wrong, I didn't want to call you out in front of the class, but you ought to really look to see what's up. His source was Fox News, and he even adknowledged that they were a GOP source. I told him look, sometimes they are right about stuff, I just happen to know for a fact that they sometimes exaggerate about WMDs. I might not have seen what you are talking about, so check it out for yourself. You might be right, I might be wrong . . . but be willing to question your own beliefs.

Straight up, that's politics in the classroom. I'm honest about what I believe, I respect student's right to disagree, and I use my power to promote a safe, respectful environment where students can express their views. It isn't about me using my authority to tell students what is or isn't right, its about helping smart young adults develop their mental and moral capacities through debate and discussion.

But maybe that wasn't what happened in your niece's class :-(

40. It's the same argument as "no athiest in a foxhole"
which is demeaning to all of us free thinking liberal athiests.

Tell them as soon as they pass their literacy test they'll vote Dem. Or, say "you mean when you pay taxes you don't feel an obligation to carry your own weight and pay back society for all those years you didn't pay taxes? I do."

Or say: "You don't really believe in God, no one could possibly believe that nonsense. You just say you believe so you will be accepted by society. Don't worry, your secret is safe with me."

And watch them blow up. It makes them so angry they can't stand it!

It pisses me off. I pay more in federal income taxes than most people make and I don't pay nearly my fair share. All those years I paid nothing when I was in school and poor, it's MY turn to carry my weight. AND, since I can afford it, I should pay it without crying.

43. The teacher is an idiot.
Public school teachers' salaries are paid with tax dollars. And private school teachers should be intelligent enough to realize that taxes provide infrastructure, libraries, police and fire protection, parks, and a host of social services that would be sorely missed if they suddenly disappeared.

Republicans do an awful lot of bitching and moaning about taxes, but I don't see any of them volunteering to take up the burden of their elderly parents' medical care or refusing to drive on public highways or suggesting that we don't need policemen or fire fighters.
Where do they think the money comes from?

If a kid showed up with a Bush Stinks tee-shirt...or even if a teacher wore a political preference item, they would be called on the carpet.. The teacher is there to teach...not convert kids to their political ideology..

and maybe that teacher should lose their union benefits...then they would see how much "fun" it is to pay for private insurance and negotiate alone for a pay raise..

That's what kills me about the stingy tight ass republicans... they are right there with their hands out to receive the benefits that democrats work so hard for, but they vote "their poocketbooks"..

They want stuff for free... Greedy thieves :(

47. Julia Child's response...
From June 2003 issue of Ms magazine:
http://www.msmagazine.com/june03/smilgis.asp

<snip near the end of the article>
"I was a Republican until I got to New York and had to live on $18 a week. It was then that I became a Democrat. "

Her thoughts on political issues are no less confident than her judgments on food.

Regarding President George W Bush: "I've nothing to say about him except that I am appalled that he was chosen by our people to be president."

HA! Take that whistleass! I was tempted to write a letter to the mag correcting Julia--the American people never chose whistleass. He was selected...
