BAGHDAD, Iraq -- In the few months since the fall of Baghdad, two U.S. soldiers and two Iraqi women courted, fell in love and decided to marry.

1. That's funny!
Not because falling in love or marriage are funny, but because US soldiers converted to the very religion idiots here in the states (including Graham's loud-mouthed son) believe to be evil and the real enemy.

I love it! More marriages for all the single people... pick a mate, any mate and confuse the hell out of the imperialistic bigots!!

The story has deeper meanings to explore, but that's for another time and place perhaps.

29. Let's see
Your average fundamentalist church? Any small town where little girls expect nothing more of their lives than getting married at 18 and having a fmaily, perhaps working the day shift at the Kwikee Mart when the kids go back to school?

There's an article in last week's Creative Loafing on that very topic. It's here at http://www.atlanta.creativeloafing.com/2003-08-21/cover.html

2. And the Vietnam parallels continue
Wonder how many Iraqi women will be bearing little soldiers and becoming single mothers...

6. A few days ago, I wrote something like this, and it was censured.
I spoke about risk of infidelity of soldiers in Iraq, and their pairs in America, when they are long time separed.

This was considered offensive to families, and censured two times.

I also think many iraqi women will become single mothers, and this could be very dangerous in musslim countries, if we remember Amila Lawal case.

You may try. Oh you can try.
But you can not stop it.
War is everywhere
paving the world with death
but love is a dandy lion.

5. Did the ladies also speak English?
I think it would be very challenging if there was also a language barrier. Now, do they come over to the US? I foget how all that works. Now with Ashcrofts SS Troopers, who knows if they will let the wives come home to the USA.

7. richard rodriduez
has a great essay on the arabizition of america as a result of our boys and girls being over there.
in every war people meet fall in love, marry, have babies and bringing the two worlds closer together. lots of our soldiers will come back with a peculiar affection for a place they were occupying by force. and thus the world becomes a little smaller one individual at a time, and culture changes. humans are so weird, and strange -- but kind of wonderful at the same time.

8. It has not been too wonderful for the Amerasian children left in Vietnam..
Edited on Thu Aug-28-03 07:39 AM by NNN0LHI
...by their American GI fathers. These children were not ever accepted into Vietnamese society. They were discriminated against, and they have been outcasts in their own society. Don't sound too wonderful to me. I suspect it will be worse for children born in Iraq who have GI dads?

11. I dout your wife was half starving or had been bombed silly before...
...she decided to convince you to get married though? A few Hershey bars can go a long way in a decimated country like Iraq.

12. It's more than a marriage for the brides(who are doctors).
It's their ticket(s) out of Iraq. You only get one ride on the big blue marble. If you were an educated woman, would you want to spend the rest of your ride in Georgie Bushie's Iraq inc.?

are taking advantage of the invasion to get the hell out of that hell hole.

I certainly hope that these women are not spies, working to gain access to the country (via the US military, Ugh).

Bring them home NOW!!!

Cheers

13. That was going to happen inevitably
I asked about that in a thread a few months ago. I hope that they have happy marriages and have children.

Also a lot of women want Green cards and want to come to America. So when they saw the Americans come in they saw Green Cards.

19. yeah you're right
and what are the guys reasons for marrying? pure love, right?

but these women must have some evil ulterior motive.

plus, what the hell makes you think they'd want to come here?

if it was me, and i really was interested in getting into a country through marriage, i'd be marrying a UK soldier.

21. I didn't say the guys had 100% altruistive motives?
Maybe they wanted to come here because this is a country that has a stable infrastructure and freedom. I would live here before I would live in Iraq. Maybe they wanted to live in a first world country where they had running water and education. America is a great country and I do think that some of them wanted to come here because there is little for them in Iraq. I know that for sure.

15. Uh, scuse me, you're over there to do a JOB, not to get your freak on.
Maybe I'm completely uneducated in how this works, and lord knows that if we were under occupation from the UK, I'd prolly want to marry me one of them....

BUT--

How is it that these soldiers have the time, in 100 degree heat, while fighting "the enemy", and whatever else they're supposed to do, to meet someone and fall in love with them? Do they have that much leisure time?

Crazier things have happened, I guess, and for all I know we're 6 months from "Baghdad Love: the movie", but I just think of all the obstacles involved and get a headache.

Eh, maybe I'm just jealous.

16. Nothing new here!
Ever since there have been wars, soldiers have brought home wives, hence, "war brides". With some it's about green cards, but in many cases it is love. I knew it was just a matter of time. The military should just stay out of it...they can't stop it anyway, and why should they. It's better to marry and bring them back here then to leave pregnant women behind.

but the G.I.s conferted to Islam. If the women were just "gold diggers" or "green diggers", they would have been willing to convert to anything, themselves.
