Striking Bus Workers in Honolulu Win When Bus Co. Says Won't Cut Benefits
Gee. It looks like they found the money somewhere afterall? These drivers won't have their benefits cut now. Wonder if that would have been the case if the Teamster represented bus drivers had not when on strike for 2 days? Don

HONOLULU (AP) - Striking bus workers who have paralyzed public transportation on Hawaii's largest island for two days won a major concession when the city's transit company said it would no longer seek benefit cutbacks.

The breakthrough Wednesday led to the scheduling of contract talks Thursday by Oahu Transit Services Inc. and Hawaii Teamsters and Allied Workers Local 996.

If a deal is reached, the union's more than 1,300 workers could be back on the job later Thursday or Friday, Local 996 President Mel Kahele said.

Perry Confalone, chief negotiator for the transit service, said the company was now willing to offer workers a "status quo" contract.

1. I know it is a mess over there
right now, with the bus drivers on strike.

Hawaii has a bus system second to none. "Da Bus" is majorly important; there are simply not enough roads to fit all the cars there if everyone decided to drive at the same time. I rode Da Bus every day as a kid going to school. Back then, 50cents could get you anywhere you wanted to go on Oahu. Buses ran every 20-30 minutes on major routes, every hour on "spurs".

2. The drivers also have an unreal scedule to contend with.
Unable to do a 8 hour shift as most people, these guys have to break it up in such a way, they come home any where from 10 to 14 hours after they leave. They have to rest during the day so as not to violate fed driving laws.

Oh well, its all settled now,

come, we go find iso peanuts
