Bill Burkett's kids write a letter to us all

http://www.billburkett.us/

The result will define whether America remains a Democracy. The prize is the heart and soul of our country, the Constitutional freedoms and Bill of Rights we cherish and depend upon.

And someone has decided that our Dad is the enemy. George Bush, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and the FreeRepublic terrorists would have you believe our Dad is a criminal. But he's not. Others would have you believe he's a liar. But his single small lie is pale in comparison to the many outrageous lies told by the media and others about him.

(here the kids tell their father's career and family values, etc.)
-snip-

Dad and Mom are in a fight that they will continue until their death. Count on that. They have been beaten upon unfairly. Dad only lied to protect his source. He has no apologies, and he has no reason to apologize to us.

We, the sons and daughter of Bill & Nicki Burkett, wish to ask you to join the battle in support of our Dad. We know him to be honorable, honest, trustworthy, and a faithful warrior for what's right in America. Now he and Mom need your help, in a way they cannot bring themselves to admit. They need financial support, to pay the exorbitant costs of this fight and to survive. Non-tax deductible donations can be made through Pay-Pal at this site. We want to thank those of you who have sent a few words of support. We truly appreciate your kind words and good wishes. Thank you.

11. I mean, here he has his kids giving us an excuse why it was okay
to lie, they used the word lie, not me. There is no excuse for lying, yet the world seems okay with all these lies. I'm simply saying, if my kid wrote a letter to excuse my deliberate alteration of the truth, then I would be condoning that it's okay to lie, when it is not.

I think Burkett did a great dis-service to the whole ordeal of Bush's record. Like the OJ trial, if the cops would have left the evidence alone, it would have been enough to convict OJ, but they messed with it, OJ goes free. Burkett was wrong, plain and simple.

14. Are you the arbiter of absolute morality?
Ever hear of situational ethics? Can you comprehend a situation where a lie could save a life?

"There is no excuse for lying".....we might tell our children that, but there are circumstances when a person is totally justified in the use of a lie for a greater social/personal good.

A good book on this is Victor Frankl's "Man Search for Meaning".

3. I don't fault Burkett for his lie, I fault him for his stupidity
He is a military man -- he is an adult -- he received documents under very suspicious circumstances -- he copied and then destroyed the originals. I'm left to wonder if his elevator still reaches the penthouse.

4. Do you have a link for that?
About all that? How do you know he destroyed the originals? I was offline over 3 days, so maybe I missed something?? How do you know all that?

7. Sure
From: http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/09/23/cbs.documents/

Burkett has subsequently revealed, through his attorney, the source of the documents -- a woman who identified herself as Lucy Ramirez, who called him to tell him she had documents related to Bush's Guard service.

The memos were later handed to Burkett by an unknown man during a visit to Houston, and Burkett said he made copies and burned the originals to protect the woman's identity.

From: http://washingtontimes.com/op-ed/20040921-085106-6584r.htm

In their conversation, Lucy Ramirez explained how she had in her custody damaging documents to Mr. Bush and scheduled a meeting with Mr. Burkett to hand them over. That meeting occurred on or around March 3 at a livestock show in Houston. But, according to Mr. Burkett, Lucy Ramirez didn't show up. Instead, as he told USA Today, an unknown "man handed him an envelope and quickly left." After receiving the memos, Mr. Burkett said he stopped off at a Kinko's store in Waco and made copies. In the parking lot outside, Mr. Burkett said he then burned the originals, pursuant to Lucy Ramirez's wishes.

From: http://worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=40624

A woman who identified herself as Lucy Ramirez called him in February, he said, saying she had some things "that I could probably do a lot more with than she could."

A man identifying himself as "Colonel" handed over an envelope March 3 at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

"It was later, hours later, that I finally looked at the documents. The document that stuck out to me ... was the one with the word sugar coat. And I thought, 'Oh my God.'"

The Los Angeles Times reported Burkett said he copied the papers and burned the originals to prevent anyone from tracing them back to Ramirez.

16. That was rich wasn't it?
How about the "sources that don't require registration" horseshit? Good gawd, they think we're rubes like them. Reading anything, and I mean anything from World Net Daily or Washington Times is for people who drink kool-aid by the bathtubfull.

Sigh.

21. Personally, I think this whole thing was a classic SNAFU...
This business about Bush's TANG service (or lack thereof) could have been a huge blow to his re-election campaign. But that story will never see the light of day again because of the f***ups made by CBS, Rather, et al. Yes, I said f***ups. How do you not make double-extra sure you know who your source is? Where the originals are? How does your producer set up a call between Lockhart and Burkett? Did Mapes not know how ~bad~ this would look no matter how innocent it may have been?

I personally think this docs likely came from Rove and his crowd, but that might even make CBS look worse. They got snookered by Rethugs-- and it played right into their hands? The TANG issue is off the table and Rather's credibility questioned. All of this could have avoided if they would have been patient with this story. Now Burkett is suing CBS? What a mess...

6. I will not help this man sue CBS when he is the one who provided
unsubstantiated documents. He assured CBS the Documents were authentic and then later says they were copies and could not be verified. I feel sorry for what he has wrought but will not help him sue CBS.

10. I have a hard time keeping up. Are we DUers supposed to hate him now?
It just seems to change daily. I think he tried to do the right thing. I think the comments about his children are rude, they are not lying about their father.. Burkett was a pawn who was set up. Direct your anger where it belongs..
