5. I don't think there are too many people living around there now
And the eruption should be nothing like 1980's (hopefully).

2. They say it will be a "small to moderate" eruption
Imminent in the next few days.

6. Will Tom Ridge up the color code?
This might be one of Osama's tricks, you know.

It could erupt on Election Day and wipe out the electoral college votes of Washington and Oregon, hence ensuring W's selection once again.

That would make Osama happy for sure.

10. It's a continuously updated JPG image, so we can include it here.
This image (below) will be updated (they say) approximately every 5 minutes. So, embedding it into this post will still always show the latest as long as you refresh your cache.

12. If you've ever flown to the West Coast from Europe
The planes seems to come down through Canada right past all the cascade peaks. They all look remarkably the same until you see St. Helens, which looks like a fallen soufflé.

13. Wow -- 4 Earthquakes a MINUTE under Mt St Helens right now
According to a news story on ABC.

10 miles high plume of ash possible in this "small to moderate" expected event.

I loved living in Portland, OR, for 3 years (I mean REALLY loved it), but for the moment I'm glad I'm in north Georgia.

There are several scientists putting themselves at some risk working on this. In the previous big explosion (1980), at least one geologist lost his life when it blew. I think a total of 57 people died, one old coot simply because they refused to leave the mountain.

Volcanic ash is a wonderful nutrient for the soil. Really. Chock full of minerals. The forest and other greenery destroyed in the blast started growing back almost immediately. Local artists used the ash for intersting things as well -- in their pottery, glass blowing. I have a beautiful handblown Xmas tree ornament with Mt St Helen's ash in it. Very beautiful with lovely colors.
