Debate suggestion for DUers
I think that we should be singing tonight for a good half hour before the debate comes on. I am convinced that this will help produce a positive vibration to help Kerry, and to tie Bush's tongue about 1/2 way into the debate.

I'd like to suggest we start with one of the greatest revolutionary songs in American history, by Woodie Guthrie:

"This land is your land, this land is my land
From california to the New York island
From the redwood forest
to the Gulf Stream waters
This land was made for you and me.

......"

I'm interested in what other songs DUers can suggest. Maybe a little of Bob Marley's "Positive Vibrations"? Thank you for your contributions, and I am very serious that we should sing!

1. I think Kerry should watch Deliverence before tonight's debate...
Especially the scene between the hillbilly and Ned Beatty..."Squeal like a pig, boy!" That should get him in the mood for a good reaming of Shrub...

4. gosh .....
I'm looking for that song on the Woody Guthrie Asch Recordings Vol #1, but it's not there. That's a different type of folk song. You do have me laughing pretty hard, though.

2. I'll sing with you!
I will be on my way to being drunk as a skunk by the 1/2 hour mark. It is the only way I will get through watching dumbass. I'll sing my little heart out.

6. okay
let's make a deal: if you get drunk enough that anything Bush says seems to make sense, translate for us here on DU. I'll be looking for you! (I'm the designated driver here!)

7. I swear Dylan was thinking of Dick Cheney when he wrote that song.
It's such a fantastic song I can't help posting the lyrics.

Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

5. Song Suggestion...
Holding Out For a Hero
Written by: Jim Steinman and Dean Pitchford
Sung by: Bonnie Tyler

Where have all the good men gone and where are all the gods?
Where's the street-wise Hercules to fight the rising odds?
Isn't there a white knight upon a fiery steed?
Late at night I toss and I turn and I dream of what I need

I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night
He's gotta be strong and he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight

I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the morning light
He's gotta be sure and he's gotta be soon
And he's gotta be larger than life

Larger than life

Somewhere after midnight
In my wildest fantasies
Somewhere just beyond my reach
There's someone reaching back for me

Racing on the thunder and rising with the heat
It's gonna take a Superman to sweep me off my feet

I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero till the end of the night
He's gotta be strong and he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight

I need a hero

I'm holding out for a hero till the morning light
He's gotta be sure and he's gotta be soon
And he's gotta be larger than life

I need a hero

I'm holding for a hero 'til the end of the night

Up where the mountains meet the heavens above
Out where the lightning strikes the sea
I can swear that there is someone somewhere watching me

Through the wind and the chill and the rain
And the storm and the flood
I can feel his approach like a fire in my blood

I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero till the end of the night
He's gotta be strong and he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight

I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero till the morning light
He's gotta be sure and he's gotta be soon
And he's gotta be larger than life

I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night
He's gotta be strong and he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight

I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the morning light
He's gotta be sure and he's gotta be soon
And he's gotta be larger than life

I need a hero

I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night

8. How about some leonard Cohen : Democracy
Edited on Thu Sep-30-04 01:36 PM by freeminder
The text is wonderfully fitting (except the neither left nor right part - for me :-))

Democracy
---------

It's coming through a hole in the air,
from those nights in Tiananmen Square.
It's coming from the feel
that this ain't exactly real,
or it's real, but it ain't exactly there.
From the wars against disorder,
from the sirens night and day,
from the fires of the homeless,
from the ashes of the gay:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

It's coming through a crack in the wall;
on a visionary flood of alcohol;
from the staggering account
of the Sermon on the Mount
which I don't pretend to understand at all.
It's coming from the silence
on the dock of the bay,
from the brave, the bold, the battered
heart of Chevrolet:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

It's coming from the sorrow in the street,
the holy places where the races meet;
from the homicidal bitchin'
that goes down in every kitchen
to determine who will serve and who will eat.
From the wells of disappointment
where the women kneel to pray
for the grace of God in the desert here
and the desert far away:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

Sail on, sail on
O mighty Ship of State!
To the Shores of Need
Past the Reefs of Greed

Through the Squalls of Hate
Sail on, sail on, sail on, sail on.

It's coming to America first,
the cradle of the best and of the worst.
It's here they got the range
and the machinery for change
and it's here they got the spiritual thirst.
It's here the family's broken
and it's here the lonely say
that the heart has got to open
in a fundamental way:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

It's coming from the women and the men.
O baby, we'll be making love again.
We'll be going down so deep
the river's going to weep,
and the mountain's going to shout Amen!
It's coming like the tidal flood
beneath the lunar sway,
imperial, mysterious,
in amorous array:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

Sail on, sail on ...

I'm sentimental, if you know what I mean
I love the country but I can't stand the scene.
And I'm neither left or right
I'm just staying home tonight,
getting lost in that hopeless little screen.
But I'm stubborn as those garbage bags
that Time cannot decay,
I'm junk but I'm still holding up this little wild bouquet:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

10. Okay, four part harmony, starting in New York:
"Nobody living can ever stop me,
As I go walking that freedom highway;
Nobody living can ever make me turn back,
This land was made for you and me!

As I went walking, I saw a sign there,
And on the sign it said, "No Tresspassing"
But on the other side it didn't say nothing,
This land was made for you and me!"

Ah, pretty good!

Live as you want to live!
Rastaman vibration, Yeah!

Say you just can't live that

you know what I mean
Make way for the positive day
'cause it's a new day
new time, new feeling, yeah!

oh what a new day!

picking up,
Are you picking up now
Jah love, Jah love, Protect us!

Rastaman vibration Yeah!

I and I vibration, yeah! Positive!
I a man iration, yeah! irie ites

picking up
Are you picking up now...

12. Bob Marley puts Haile Selassie's speech to song!
What life has taught me
I would like to share with
those who want to learn ....

Until the philosophy which holds
one race superior and another inferior
is finally and permanently discredited
and abandoned
that until there are no longer
first class and second class citizen
of any nation
until the color of a man's skin
is of no more significance than
the colour of his eyes
that until their basic human rights
are equally guarenteed to all
without regard to race

That until that day,
the dream of lasting peace, world
citizenship and the rule of
international morality
will remain in but a fleeting illusion
to be pursued, but never attained

and until the ignoble and unhappy
regime that now holds our brothers
in Angola, in Mozambique, South Africa
in sub-human bondage, have been
toppled utterly destroyed

until that day the African continent
will not know peace
we Africans will fight, if necessary
and we know we shall win
as we are confident in the victory of
good over eveil, good over evil

until bigotry and prejudice
malicious and human self interest
have been replaced by understanding
and tolerance and goodwill
until all Africans stand and speak
as Free Beings equal in the eyes
of the Almighty!

(Speech by Haile Selassie; California; Feb. 28, 1968)
