Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 01:54 PM by BeachBuckeye
Congressman Steve Israel from New York is our guest today to speak about the debate. We should have a lot of fun talking about Kerry literally butchering Bush on Thursday evening. I LOVED it!! Much to talk about. Call toll free at 1-888-602=7500, 7501, 7502, 7503, 7504

Please call and give us your thoughts about the debate. This should be a VERY good show with your help today

Larry. I am just so incredibly delighted to have been able to get Rick on with Guy. Thank you most of all to nostamj and to VetWife! Without the two of you it may not have happened.

Please, if Guy's interview made you want for more, go to:

http://www.veteransforamerica.com/index2.htm

Just listen to any one of the speeches Rick makes and to the response from the crowds.

Kerry and Edwards need to make these guys their very best friends.

Once again, thank you Nostamj, thank you VetWife and most of all, thank you Guy.

7. I look forward to the show
As Jon Stewart pointed out after the debate, Kerry was writing in his notes during the debate "I am SO crushing this guy" (but this could be an apocryphal story). :-) {BTW, perhaps smearing is not quite the proper word, since that is really what republicans do to us. It was more like a rout (as Will Pitt would say).}

To: All of my fellow members on the Democratic Underground

From: coreystone

Several months ago I received an automatically generated E-Mail from MoveOn. It suggested that for those of us that reside in heavily BLUE states, that we might support other states which are in much more jeopardy of losing to the “reds”. I thought that this was a tremendous idea. Though I didn’t follow suit to donate directly to MoveOn (at that time), I pursued alternative avenues to “adopt a state” that I felt was in need. After much consideration, I chose Florida. I certainly, at that time, did not envision the natural disasters of four hurricanes devastating so many areas of that great state. Still, the elections are upon us. We have very little time.

It has come to my attention that Guy still needs our help. There were so many variables in the 2000 election between Gore and the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue which were so pivotal in determining the national outcome for us all! I know that many of us realize that EVERY VOTE counts, whether in Vermont, or, Florida. Since my state, Vermont, is BLUE, I still feel an urgency to help Kerry collect the 27 electoral votes from Florida in 2004; a state that I still feel Gore won.

As we all know every vote counts; every vote counts just as much for me and others living in BLUE states, as it does in Florida. I support the Guy James Show because it is an alternative to many of the Republican machines which are jamming the airwaves in Florida. If GUY can even get the ONE vote which may give Kerry the GO AHEAD for the 27 electoral votes nationally, then, I will feel as though our efforts have been worth the effort.

At this time I would like to make an offer:

There is a site which offers “Magnetic Kerry-Edwards bumper stickers.

For the first 50 members of DU making a direct donation of $5.00 or more, I will send a "Kerry-Edwards" magnetic sticker direct from the distributor, USPS first class mail, for donating to the "Guy James Show".

For any who would care to donate on this “GUY JAMES SHOW” Fundraiser, please contact “vetwife”! She will assure you that it is 100% above the table for a good cause. We do not want a repeat of 2000!

-coreystone

44. Veterans for America has a nice comparison between the records
of Kerry and Bush on military and veterans issues:

THE TRUTH ABOUT JOHN KERRY

The Republicans would like you to believe that Senator John Kerry is soft regarding the defense of our country. That is part of the administrations attempt to keep the TRUTH away from the American public. The Truth is that John Kerry is one of the strongest supporters of America’s military. He voted for the largest increase to the defense budget (2002) since the early 1980’s.

48. Good article in CSM about the "enduring (read permanent)" military bases
Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 03:45 PM by Dudley_DUright
If a new Iraq government should agree to let American forces stay on, how many bases will the US request?

One, as the United States Army currently maintains in Honduras? Six, the number of installations it lists in the Netherlands. Or maybe 12? The Pentagon isn't saying.

But a dozen is the number of so-called "enduring bases" located by John Pike, director of GlobalSecurities.org. His military affairs website gives their names. They include, for example, Camp Victory at the Baghdad airfield and Camp Renegade in Kirkuk. The Chicago Tribune last March said US engineers are constructing 14 "enduring bases," but Mr. Pike hasn't located two of them.

Note the terminology "enduring" bases. That's Pentagon-speak for long-term encampments - not necessarily permanent, but not just a tent on a wood platform either. It all suggests a planned indefinite stay on Iraqi soil that will cost US taxpayers for years to come.

The actual amount depends on how many troops are stationed there for the long term. If the US decides to reduce its forces there from the 138,000 now to, say, 50,000, and station them in bases, the costs would run between $5 billion to $7 billion a year, estimates Gordon Adams, director of Security Policy Studies at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. That's two to three times as much as the annual American subsidy to Israel. Providing protection for Israel is one of several reasons some analysts cite for the US invasion of Iraq.

77. here's the transcript of the "Let me finish" moment...
Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 04:31 PM by nostamj
I think what is misleading is to say you can lead and succeed in Iraq if you keep changing your positions on this war. And he has. As the politics change, his positions change. And that's not how a commander in chief acts.

Let me finish.

The intelligence I looked at was the same intelligence my opponent looked at, the very same intelligence. And when I stood up there and spoke to the Congress, I was speaking off the same intelligence he looked at to make his decisions to support the authorization of force.

on edit: this was during a 90 second rebuttal, not a 30 second follow-up...

79. "Let me finish"!
Sidney Blumenthal mentions this in his review of the "debate", too..

"In the split TV screen, how Bush felt was written all over his face. His grimaces exposed his irritation and anger at being challenged. Lacking intellectual stamina and repeating points as though on a feedback loop, he tried to close argument by assertion. With no one interrupting him, he protested, "Let me finish" - a phrase he occasionally deploys to great effect before the cowed White House press corps."

93. here's the a clip from the Newsweek article...
Oct. 2 - With a solid majority of voters concluding that John Kerry outperformed George W. Bush in the first presidential debate on Thursday, the president’s lead in the race for the White House has vanished, according to the latest NEWSWEEK poll. In the first national telephone poll using a fresh sample, NEWSWEEK found the race now statistically tied among all registered voters, 47 percent of whom say they would vote for Kerry and 45 percent for George W. Bush in a three-way race.

Removing Independent candidate Ralph Nader, who draws 2 percent of the vote, widens the Kerry-Edwards lead to three points with 49 percent of the vote versus the incumbent’s 46 percent. Four weeks ago the Republican ticket, coming out of a successful convention in New York, enjoyed an 11-point lead over Kerry-Edwards with Bush pulling 52 percent of the vote and the challenger just 41 percent.

Among the three-quarters (74 percent) of registered voters who say they watched at least some of Thursday’s debate, 61 percent see Kerry as the clear winner, 19 percent pick Bush as the victor and 16 percent call it a draw. After weeks of being portrayed as a verbose “flip-flopper” by Republicans, Kerry did better than a majority (56 percent) had expected. Only about 11 percent would say the same for the president’s performance while more than one-third (38 percent) said the incumbent actually did worse that they had expected. Thirty-nine percent of Republicans felt their man out-debated the challenger but a full third (33 percent) say they felt Kerry won.

101. Don't forget, Guy James, that Bush tried to duck debates with Al Gore
Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 05:37 PM by JudiLyn
Remember he tried to change the format of debate altogether by having his people try to get the debates done on Larry King. I think they also said that debates aren't necessarily required of a candidate, as they didn't start doing them until Kennedy/Nixon, or some such nonsense.

He really wanted to avoid them with Gore.

I PRAY he finishes the ones scheduled with Kerry. It was excellent hearing your views today. Democrats needed that debate.

Hope we all have a lot to celebrate next week! Great show. Thanks.
