Right now I'm watching Michelle Malkin on C-SPAN 2, a taping from September 8 about her book "The Defense of Internment". The thing I find disturbing is her disdain for civil liberties for everybody, but also her support for racial/religious profiling particularly against Muslims and Arabs. Her assertion is that if we had racial profiling at the borders and internally that 9/11 would have been prevented. The problem I have with this assertion is that it doesn't address our biggest national security hole, domestic Christian terrorists.
How soon have we forgotten the second worst terrorist attack on US soil, Oklahoma City? Just last year, 2 Christian Terrorists were caught by sheer luck in possession of an Chlorine/Arsenic bomb that could have killed, not thousands, but tens of thousands of people. This includes several thousand bombs of Arsenic and Chlorine, hundreds of pounds of explosives, automatic weapons, etc. etc. Not to mention all the terrorist bombings and assassinations that have occured in the '90s and will occur in the future. Yet these barely make page B12 much less front page as they should. This also bears in mind the media's treatment of these people, I call them terrorist, yet have never heard, outside of McVeigh, any reference to these people as being Christian (christanic?) Terrorists.
This to me is a big hole, because, guess what, most people won't look with suspicion at the White Guy taking photographs of a nuclear power plant, but if you look even slightly tanned, LOOK OUT, your going to get your ass arrested. Think about what would have happened if those two Terrorist above set off their bomb in a stadium, or another mass gathering, what would have happened then, will we ever hear calls from the likes of Michelle Malkin talking about rounding up all White Christian People, I don't think so.
The problem this MM makes is that, all the suggestions she makes wouldn't really work as well as she thinks. What better way to breed terrorists than to treat good citizens as criminals? With no definable enemy, this war on terror could drag on for lifetimes, and also could change focus as well. What if, as an example, Northern Ireland erupts again? What if it spilled onto our soil, lets say some British Embassies are bombed by Irish nationalists here? Will I be profiled because my name, first and last, are Irish? I don't think so. I'll be damned if anyone tried that shit on me, or on anyone else regardless of their nationality or religion.
The other problem is this, there were already tools and enforcement capability available BEFORE 9/11 and BEFORE the Patriot Act. The problem was that the warnings were ignored. She seems to think that we were hindered by the "Liberal" Media and ACLU. This is erronious, as she herself has stated, most of the terrorist in the planes on 9/11 were here illegally. The problem is that the INS is perpetually underfunded and can't be on the ball, they dropped it. Before 9/11, the INS had the power to expel ANYONE whether from Britian or Saudi Arabia that they thought was a threat, even if here legally. This excludes asylum seekers, and even then they have to go to court to prove immenent threat of harm from their home country.
Could we do more, yes of course, but not at the expense of our civil liberties.
