Keep Your Eye on the Prize !!!!
I am not posting this on GD: Campaign 2004, because although it is related to the presidential campaign, it is also about much more. But I would like to remind people that in 2002, Karl Rove told republicans that they should campaign on the war issue, because the public tended to trust their party more on military issues. Then in May of 2003, President Bush landed on a war ship, wearing a uniform and posing in front of a "Mission Accomplished" banner. We know that Karl Rove planned for this to be used in the up-dated version of "Morning in America" campaign commercials.

But the war has gone terribly wrong, and we are seeing "Mourning in America." Any hope that Bush could capitalize on his strutting on the ship was sunk when Michael Moore released a historic movie, "Fahrenheit 9/11." And the democratic party nominated a candidate that was a true war hero, John Kerry.

Rove and his minions recognized that they were vulnerable on the military issues. They had allowed Usama bin Laden to escape to safety in Afghanistan; they lied about WMDs in Iraq; and they had started a fight that they appear unabled to win. So what did they do? They bagan to attack Kerry on his record in Vietnam, and to try to distract the public with talk about a constitutional amendment to protect our society from the extreme dangers posed by homosexuals wanting to get married.

When we step back and remember those two things, we should be able to re-access the discussions after the third presidential debate. Why have we allowed the republicans to draw us in to a debate on VP Cheney's daughter? Our party has taken a clear position on gay rights. We should not get into an argument with the republicans.

Instead, we need to concentrate on George W. Bush's statement that he never said he wasn't concerned about Usama bin Laden. Of course he said that. It's on the Moore movie. It needs to be on commercials across the country. The American public needs to see these film clips, not to hear more and more about the Cheney family.

I urge DUers to help refocus the national discussion onto this issue. I say that Bush looked more foolish than did Gerald Ford in '76; he looks like more of an idiot than Dan Quayle did in '88. This is our pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! Talk about it; write about it; and send donations to the DNC to pay for commercials to slam the message home to America.

Thank you.
