Nixon's Reelection- the Horror of the 70's |
|
In 1972 he won in a huge landslide, even after all the protests, Kent State, Jackson State massacres, and Watergate was already coming out. Viet Nam was clearly a disaster. Two weeks before the election, Kissinger said that the war was almost over (total lie). He beat war hero McGovern so badly. I was young then and I just couldn't believe it was happening. We hated him so but the same hard right wingnuts supported him. Along with all the continued war destruction and death, he got to put Rehnquist in which ultimately ruined the Supreme Court. I hope this doesn't happen again. I don't think I could stand it.

I'm from Massachusetts" (or was then), as the bumper stickers said at the time. But I hear ya. George McGovern was a much weaker candidate than Kerry. MUCH weaker.

Reagan was re-elected and ever since America has been dis-eased by the fever which followed.
It's like a real life 'Alien' movie. There is something occupying the political body of America, just waiting to pounce upon the unsuspecting.
Nixon was the first incarnation, Reagan the second, B*sh the third. Each time it gains strength.

4. tricky dick's reelection was a slap by the stupid establishment. |

His fall from the presidency was a bittersweet beginning of the end of the Vietnam era. Dear God, I never thought I would have to relive those horrors, yet, fast forward to the present, here we are again except this time the country has been hijacked by the ship of fools. Welcome to DU, Mend. :hippie:

was that there was a mere 6-year interlude before Ronnie. 6 years after our "long national nightmare", Republicans were once again ascendant, but meaner and crazier than before. Face it, Americans love big-stick authoritarian simpletons.

but nothing compared to a Bush election. With Nixon we knew we could ride it out.It was bad,but the Nation as a whole was not damaged. If Bush actually wins this time the Nation will fall apart. Civil war if they don't let us go peacefully.
