Help me understand the "Oil for Food" scandal... |
|
Nowadays, almost every other word out of right-wingers is "oil for food" this and "oil for food" that as justification to go to war. As I am aware, the details are murky but the story consists of Saddam giving oil vouchers to the UN and foreign companies for useless humanitarian goods. Even if all of this is true, then how does this make the war justified? Any links with more info would be great. I haven't been paying much attention to this.

It makes no sense at all. In effect, that's like going to war with a family that's cheating on welfare. So, Saddam gives vouchers to the UN that he won't back up. Isn't war a little bit of an overreaction?

5. I never have understood it either, except it seemed to be a way to |

discredit the U.N. That must be true, since I've never heard anyone left-of-center bring up that topic. To their credit, I don't hear much about it from the mainstream media, either.
Come to think of it, I also never heard any more about all those laptops that were supposedly stolen from a Repub campaign office somewhere. Maybe because there was nothing to it.
(It's nice when the press drops the false stories - happens every once in a while, I know.)
