The Chimpleton and Rove/Cheney = Puzzle & Shift - any CSLewis fans?
The Last Battle, C.S. Lewis' final installment in the Chronicles of Narnia, tell how the Narnians are fooled by a simple-minded donkey, Puzzle, forced to pose as god (actually wrapped in a lion's skin like the Narnian god) by the evil and scheming ape Shift. The donkey shows up in dim light, wrapped in his religion, while the ape runs the show and talks about what god wants.

Apart from the very thinly veiled anti-Islamic themes in the book (and the fact that Smirky, unlike Puzzle, is half-aware of his part in the scam), I find the parallels to the way our citizens are taken in by these con-artists very similar.
