A statement in a recent article about right-wing justices like Scalia and Thomas wanting to make it OK for states to institute a religious dogma and use state money to proselytize their faith.
It reminded me of an incident that happened to me nearly a year and a half ago in Pelahatchie, MS, where I was a beat reporter covering a D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) graduation program for a bunch of elementary school students. One of the speakers there was the political-appointee of the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics and Firearms (I don't remember the exact name of the department...). While giving his speech, he said:
"I don't care what the constitution says. This is Mississippi, and here we believe in God."
This was followed by a JUDGE (juvenile court, I think) who basically suggested that those who don't accept Christ Jesus would live a tragic life and die "empty" and alone, basically teaching these elementary students that if such a person did not accept Christianity, they DESERVED to have a tragic life and die alone, that they did not deserve compassion, and that the "faithful" should isolate them and not have anything to do with them.
It's a very appalling thing for those of us who don't drink the kool-aid, but I left that event FURIOUS at these public officials, one of whom PUBLICLY denounced the constitution and the rule of law.
Be vigilant everyone. If it is not opposed, this sort of thing WILL spread, even moreso than it has already.

1. Wait until they try to make evil illegal... |
|
Then it will be up to constructionist judges to determine what's 'evil' and what's 'good', and base their rulings on that.
Nevermind established jurisprudence; they're on the hotline with the almighty.

"Saddam WANTED WMDs!"
Yeah, well I WANT to rob a bank, because I want the money. I will not do it, because there are consequences. But I WANT to have the money!
