This letter to the editor ran in today's Hartford Courant:


No Shame In Being Liberal

I am an 82-year-old liberal. That is not a four-letter word. We liberals have done a lot for this country.

Stop and think. Without liberals, would we have a minimum wage and a 40-hour workweek; child labor laws; Social Security; unemployment help; compensation welfare; or low rent? Or what about the GI Bill that provides college for veterans and GI loans for housing?

We liberals have helped this country get ahead. If the right wing had its way, the robber barons would lead us back to the 19th century.

1. And what about women's rights? especially reproductive rights.

Also add to that list environmental laws, safe food packaging and handling laws, etc.
Although I've always been a registered Dem, its only recently that I've really appreciated what progressive people have done for this country.
