THE ONCOMING TSUNAMI -- will you be ready?
Edited on Fri Oct-22-04 06:46 PM by Eloriel
I have been collecting a few links as I see them over the past several days. This election is going to be a nightmare. Seeing all these posts, I'm beginning to think that -- well, it could get really bad.

Voter registration has been unbelievable, in record numbers, and heavily favoring Democrats. Lawyers for both sides are in place all over the country. There are already lawsuits and other conflicts. Vote suppression techniques are in play everywhere, and don't forget the riggable electronic voting machines. Further, despite the binky polls, I think we all have a pretty strong sense that Kerry is ahead, which will only intensify the Bush/Cheney efforts to win at any cost. Remember (as some other DUer who I wish I remembered once said), They didn't steal the 2000 election in order to do good.

And they won't stop at much (or anything?) to steal another. We ARE going to have unbelievable chaos this election. I have no idea how long it will last or where it will end, but I'm beginning to think we ALL really need to wrap our heads around a bunch of different scenarios, and make plans accordingly.

Here are the links I've collected, just the ones I happened to notice, just when I was around, and not even visiting GD2004 (feel free to add any I missed):

1. I've been a nervous wreck.
Thanks for all the links, Eloriel. I'll tell you, if we don't have an absolutely undisputable landslide for Kerry, I think there will be chaos.

These crooks are not going to simply give up power politely because election results tell them to.

Are we prepared to fight it?

If it's a Kerry landslide - will the GOP say "It was such a close race, must be rigged"?

12. It is NOT a close race.
The *media would like everyone to think so in support of their corporate masters, but it is in REALITY a rout. Elections are decided in the hair salons, barber shops, laundromats and malls. Folks are seeing teenies without limbs in the malls, their jobs outsourced, their pensions looted, their homes foreclosed, that 2 day "float" they relied on at the bank to make ends meet without penalty disappear, medical bills they cannot pay, long lines at the soup kitchens, high prices at the pumps and their weekly visits to have their hair done and babble on to Linda or Joe cut out of the budget to put food on the table. Tell me again it's a "close" race. YOUR MEDIA IS DESTROYING YOU.

20. Either/or.
I truly hope you're completely right aout it being a Democratic rout of the reThugs. We shouldn't take anything for granted, though.

I think it's actually a good thing that the media keep saying it's a close race. It'll keep our people on edge and anxious to vote. The last thing we need is Dems staying home, feeling complacent or assured that our side is winning.

41. YES, they WILL
They're already promoting that idea AND that we're involved in vote suppression and other nasties now. Novak was the first that I know of, a few weeks ago (I'm not sure there's a link for that in my collection) to suggest that Democrats would be "stealing" this election.

THIS IS PART OF THEIR STRATEGY!

(It's not that I think Democrats have never engaged in election shenanigans, just that ours is usually small potatoes stuff at the local level -- still wrong, of course! and I'd support the strongest penalties for it, but NOT national election stuff).

28. I hadn't thought about not being able to access DU...
I was just saying in another thread that I hoped that DU would remain in place after the elections...JUST SO we could continue to keep in contact....just in case we needed to "organize".

Perhaps we SHOULD be thinking of a plan B..just in case. First thing that comes to mind is Short wave radio..but do those things still exist? CQ, CQ come in CQ (lol) How about a mailing registry...some way to keep in touch through snail mail or telephone via some collective drop spot. Perhaps several meeting places around the country on every fourth thursday of the month ...whatever...

Just brainstorming for "just in case" Any other thoughts?

WHEN they shutdown the INTERNET(they will, they have to)shortwave would be the only way to communicate outside of the system.IT "IS" DEFINITELY TIME TO TALK ABOUT PLAN B.My only suggestion would be that we cannot let things get that far that we lose the ability to communicate with one another.WE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD!!!!!! and "Don't let your meat loaf."

Republican legislators prevented the electronic voting machine problem from being solved. The evidence of this is irrefutable and is out in the open for all to see. If this evidence were presented to an honest judge or panel of judges in court in a legal battle , the judge or judges would have no recourse but to believe that there was deliberate premeditated intent on the part of republican legislators, and possibly the republican party, to commit voter fraud and/or knowingly and deliberately allow a flawed voting system to be used for the specific purpose of being able to mount a challenge to ballot counts on which ballots were cast on a system that republicans specifically devised to be inaccurate, unrecountable, and challengeable. Like stacking the deck for a devious win-win result.

Even if there is no direct legal relief for this type of chicanery, it could somewhat prejudice a court toward Democrats because it is so obvious and provable that republicans were deliberately preventing electronic voting machine results from being legitimately and verifiably countable and recountable. A judge or judges could weigh this fact in conjunction with the documented fraud committed in Florida in 2000 and information such as is posted in Eloriel's topic post in this thread, and very quickly laugh any republican challenge right out of court.

OTOH, Democrats, in addition to the fact that they repeatedly attempted to make electronic voting machine results legitimately accurate and verifiable through petition and legislation, have a great deal of documented evidence that republicans are using other nefarious and numerous vote disruption methods nationwide in an attempt to prevent voters from voting, and are obviously intent on fraudulently stealing the election, and could possibly present this corroborating evidence in a legitimate and successful legal challenge to electronic voting machine results.

If republicans lose the election by a large margin and try to mount a challenge on the basis that casting ballots on electronic voting machines is an illegitimate, unreliable, and inaccurate voting method, a judge could point out that BBV in its present general nationwide incarnation is the method that republicans, and pretty much republicans alone, despite repeated insistent citizen petition and the introduction of corrective legislative proposals in Congress, essentially forced upon the voters and citizens of the US. On that basis, I would hope that a court could, and would, rapidly dismiss any challenge made by republicans.

...just to give it back without a fight. Democrats need to remember that even the Bushies know what they did was illegal and immoral. They don't believe in fair play, an even playing field or democracy. They can't afford to turn 'their' government over to those who might prosecute them.

- It should go without saying that they have most of the media and powerful corporations that want to see Bush* stay in office.

27. El your work is awesome. Thanks again.
It's 1:30 am here on west coast. As it turns out, my radio host is talking about many of these same things. Some people are worried, others know the challenge but still feel really positive over the outcome. Not many days now....we shall see.

I don't think anyone could argue against the fact that this election is going to be something outstanding for the history books!!

I'm positively excited BUT feeling some apprehension as well. If Kerry wins.......how will the RWer's react? Yikes!

31. When Kerry wins, we'll hear a lot of moaning and whining from

freepers and their ilk. I pray we can see a return to civility, though, to a country where the two parties coexist and even work together on some issues.

But many of those on the right are really sore losers and boors as well.

43. OMG. Look at all these from TODAY -- My head is spinning
Edited on Sat Oct-23-04 09:10 PM by Eloriel
Now, a few of them are not "bad news," but are indicators of all the activity going on behind the scenes, a little under the radar -- surge in voter registrations and the like.

But I am just ... well, overwhelmed with all this from just TWO forums: LBN and GD, going back a few pages in each forum. A few of these were started on Friday (sorry if any are duplicates, but I'm pretty sure there aren't many). A very small number of links are on the same story (e.g., a Republican company's Nevada voter registration antics).

So here they are, mostly from today -- and the night is young.

Columbus Dispatch: GOP Challenges (35,427 Ohio) Voters
In yet another sign of how fiercely Ohio will be contested in the Nov. 2 presidential election, Republicans challenged 35,427 newly registered voters yesterday. And both parties named thousands of people to be challengers at the polls.
<snip>
But overburdened elections officials were left wondering how to comply with a state law requiring a hearing on each challenge no later than two days before the election.

Those who have been challenged must receive a letter by first-class mail no later than three days before a hearing to answer the challenge — with a lawyer and witnesses, if they choose.
<snip>

The Repubs harvested the addresses from all newly-registered voters then sent out mailing to all of them. Any mailing which came back undelivered was automatically challenged.

The good news: over 700,000 new voters signed up statewide.

51. A few more from today
Remember, I make no claims that this is all-inclusive. This list too includes some good news, along with the bad.

Daily Endorsement Tally: On 'Super Sunday,' Kerry Makes Huge Gains
New York Senator John Kerry continued his raid on newspapers that backed President George W. Bush in 2000, grabbing 17 new "flip-flops," as well as The Washington Post. He has now won over at least 28 papers that went for Bush in 2000, while Bush has only earned two Gore papers.

However, Bush got a real prize in Ohio, the Columbus Dispatch.

Kerry now leads Bush 112-69 in endorsements in E&P's exclusive tally, and by about 14.4 million to 8.6 million in the circulation of backing papers.
