2. Environmentalism and dependence on oil should be a big issue
I think that it could be a good talking point for people who embrace more "conservative" values or think that Kerry won't be any better than Bush. If the only thing that Kerry does to make America better than Bush is that he encourages alternative energy and other energy saving technologies, his presidency will still be a success. Bush wants to make as much money off of oil while he can with no regards to how this affects the average American, the environment, or the future.

5. Some people would call this a Freudian slip
I think he meant to say "discourages" consumption, seeing as how the world's experts are telling us that we face a serious energy shortage over the next 50 years.
