In his short work GANDHI-A MEMOIR, William Shirer compares and
contrasts the appeal of Gandhi with that of Hitler.Gandhi's appeal was based on the idea that one does not have to hate the people who oppress you;you can disobey their laws if you are prepared to suffer the consequences and that very act can produce changes in the oppressor. This, of course, led to India's Freedom from the British.

Hitler's appeal was based on using psychological techniques to induce fear and victimization to arouse his people and advocate the use of subterfuge, force and ruthless violnce against all enemies of the German people. The results wer a war that consumed countless millions of lives and of course the Holocaust.

I firmly believe that although we have fortunately not arrived at the level of ruthlessness of a Hitler yet, the belief in military power, the ease with which lies are uttered by Bush and his spokesmen
and the studied indifference of our people to the sufferings of the Iraqi people makes me think we are on our way if we continue on this road.

I am certain Bill Shirer would agree with me.His epilog to the classic
RISE AND FALL OF THE THIRD REICH compares our courtiers with the courtiers in Berlin and the comparison is not very favorable to our courtiers.
