"JFK Satirist Vaughn Meader Dies"
AUBURN, Maine (AP) - Vaughn Meader, who gained fame satirizing John F. Kennedy's presidency in the multimillion-selling album "The First Family" only to have his star plummet when the president was assassinated, died Friday. He was 68.

Meader, who had battled by chronic emphysema and other ailments, died at his home in this central Maine city after refusing to be taken to the hospital, his wife, Sheila, said.

When it came out in late 1962, poking gentle fun at JFK's wealth, large family and "vigah,""The First Family" became the fastest-selling record of its time, racking up 7.5 million copies and winning the Grammy for album of the year.

Compared with today's bare-knuckled political humor, the satire was tame, but it tickled the funnybone of the Kennedy-obsessed public.

1. The night of the Kennedy Assassination. . .
when Lenny Bruce took the stage he stood for the longest time, holding the mike pressed to his lips, struggling to maintain his composure, to find the right words for such a tragic evening. After a few moments, he pulled himself together, finally looked out at the audience, and in a voice cracking with emotion said, "Poor Vaughn Meader."

2. That record was everywhere
I used to work at a record store. It seems like every pile of used records that had anything fom the 60's had a copy of that thing. Half the people in the country must have owned it some point.

3. My folks had that album......and they were Republicans.
It was a pretty funny send up of JFK in a non-smearing way.

I didn't known he lived in ME, though.

12. I've met Tim a few times...
he is a pretty funny dude. I also met Marshall Dodge back in the 80s in Portland. "Bert and I" was some wicked good comedy.

5. "Me, me, me, Daddy" "No Caroline, I was first!"
"No, pick me, Daddy!"

"No, pick ME!"

"All right, you youngsters, just settle down and I'll answer your questions in turn. Now, Bobby, I believe you were first." :-)

My mother has that on an old LP. Hilarious.

6. Vaughn was a Yippie
What a lot of people don't know is that Vaughn was involved with Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, et al in the formation of the Yippie movement. I attended a strategy roundtable back in 1968 and he was there, wearing a leather fringe jacket.

7. I still have a 33 LP with him on it, been centuries since I played it
actually no turntable any more. ;-) I used to be able to do a pretty good impression of him/JFK....."yesh, about Cuber..." that sort of silly stuff. He was a funny guy.

8. "Ahh, the baby in the back row, Baby John, what is your question?
Baby John: goo-goo ga-ga ba-ba-ba?

JFK: Ahh, I believe I answered that question last week, and at that time I stated, "A waddy waddy woo a waddy woo".

My apologies if this is wrong as I'm running on memory from forty + years ago.
