Nanci Griffith decides not to leave the US.
Nice article about Nanci Griffith. Also, just as a reminder, Nashville was a blue county in a red state.

She said it because she meant it: In August, Nashville-based singer-songwriter Nanci Griffith told The Tennessean that she planned to move out of the country if President Bush was re-elected.

''I do have a new home in Ireland now,'' Griffith said Friday when asked about whether she intended to follow through. ''And I was planning to leave. I guess about two weeks after that article came out, though, I ran into Brenda Lee around town.''

Griffith said Lee, a singer who is in the Country Music and Rock and Roll halls of fame, ''came up to me and said, 'I'm not going to let you leave. We need you too badly.' That so impressed me. Other people called me relentlessly on Wednesday, saying, 'We need your voice.' So I'm going to keep my home in Nashville and split time between here and Ireland.''

she's a real treasure. Love her and her music. :)

We all feel like leaving some days but then we decide the best thing to do is stay and fight. }(

2. Lucky for her, she CAN have it both ways, an option not available
to majority of the "left-behinds". No, now is NOT the time to leave, especially now. We need all the help we can get.

6. I like her a lot, perhaps the ONLY country singer I like. I don't care a
fig for country music as a whole. She's more folk-country, I think.

She's big on down-to-earth, liberal themes. Get her "Other Voices, Other Rooms" CD first. I also like her early LIVE album "One Fair Summer Evening" which features many early hits.

18. Well, Dixie Chicks are one of us at this point...
full blooded commie pinko liberals. :7

It's interesting to see some names of other country musicians who go against the grain.

9. I think that she is
classified more as Americana than country or folk.

12. No prob!
:)

Many folks who may be unfamiliar with her will recognize some of her songs that have been hits by other artists such as "From A Distance."

She's an excellent songwriter!

Yes, right now I can't recall the artist who did a cover of that song.

17. Have to make a slight correction
Julie Gold wrote From a Distance, but Nanci's cover of it was the first and, in my opinion, the best. I cannot listen to her song Trouble in the Fields without a few tears.

There's a book up on the shelf about those dust bowl days
And there's a little bit of me and a little bit of you
in the photos on every page
Now our children live in the city
and they rest upon our shoulders
They never want the rain to fall
or the weather to get colder

And all this trouble in our fields
If this rain can fall, these wounds can heal
They'll never take our native soil
But if we sell that new John Deere
And then we'll work these crops with sweat and tears
You'll be the mule, I'll be the plow;
Come harvest time we'll work it out
There's still a lot of love,
here in these troubled fields
