Hi All. I know that earlier, someone posted the letter that Bob Jones sent to George Bush. I was so floored after reading it, I just had to respond.
I went to their website, and emailed my response to Bob Jones. Here is what I wrote to Bob Jones:
Mr. Jones: While surfing online this evening, I happened upon your congratulatory letter to George Bush, and I must say that I have found it to be one of the most vile and dispicable things I have ever read. Before I address the religious aspects of your letter, let me address the political. You start it by saying that George Bush received the largest number of popular votes of any American President. First, we don't know exactly how many votes he received. They are still counting votes in Ohio, for example, and after provisional ballots are counted, it is very possible that the original totals from Election Night will be revised. Secondly, George Bush has not mandate. His 'victory' (if it is one) is the smallest margin of victory for an incumbent President seeking reelection. Now, if I could address the more religious aspects of your letter. You stated to George Bush that "They (the liberals) despise you because they despise your Christ." As a Christian who dearly loves the Lord, and was baptized at an early age, I find that comment utterly offensive and without merit. I proudly voted my values in this election. And my Christian values dictated that I vote for Senator Kerry. When Senator Kerry talked about the need for health care for all Americans, that was a Christian value. When he talked about the need to lift up those Americans working multiple jobs and trying to raise their children, that was a Christian value. When he talked about the need to be honest with the American people, that was a Christian value. Our precious Lord and Savior cared about lifting up the least among us. And He also cared about truthfulness, honesty and integrity. And it is not a Christian value to kick children out of after-school programs, simply to pay for a tax cut for the wealthy. It is not a Christian value to lie about the need to take the United States to war against a country who has never attacked or threatened to attack us. You also stated that "Because you seek the Lord daily, we who know the Lord will follow that kind of voice eagerly." Mr. Jones, neither you nor I are with George W. Bush daily, and so we don't know if he seeks the Lord on a daily basis. However, I do know that the Scripture teaches us that faith without works is dead. And I would argue that I have seen little evidence that George Bush has saught the Lord daily. Now, the Scripture also teaches us that "His thoughts are not our thoughts." But I would imagine that if George W. Bush saught the Lord daily, the Lord would have spoken to him and asked him to bring this country together, not divide it. I would imagine that the Lord would have told him to appeal to our best hopes, not play to our worst fears. Shortly before the election, George Bush said it was "up in the air" if we would truly ever be safe again. And I would argue that if he truly saught the Lord, George Bush would know that the Lord has not given us a spirit of fear, and that when we trust in Him, it is not "up in the air" if we will ever be safe again. I pray that you will be much more responsible with your rhetoric, and seek the Lord before you go forth in His name.
