Plausible scenario? Ashcroft stayed until after the election to help Bush
secure the religious right’s vote? Ashcroft was pretty sick a short time ago. Maybe he wanted to quit then but stayed on to help Bush hide the extreme direction he plans to pursue. I'm not saying that Ashcroft isn't extreme, but there are religious people who were comfortable with him, who would not like the author of the abuse memos as AG.

Your thoughts?

1. three things
to hide his illness

to preclude discussions about his replacement

to keep the issue of the destruction of our civil rights off the front pages

3. Yeah ---
I agree

And the fundies/freepers are MAD about Gonzales (tho' they're somewhat comforted by the fact that he won't (they think) be nominated for the Supreme Court now.

5. I hope they're able to keep him out
I definitely hope they're able to keep Gonzales out. As much as I fear the notion of who else they might pick, I don't think it's good at all for our country that Bush has selected a person who calls the Geneva Conventions "quaint".

We will not be a superpower forever.

6. just wait until Justice Asscroft
That would be so evil, banal, and destructive to public trust that it's almost certainly being considered by the administration.
