Easy, Cheap Way To Help Wounded Troops For The Holidays
Edited on Thu Nov-11-04 10:35 AM by K8-EEE
This is posted in the "activist" section but I hope it's OK to bring it up here. Many people are unaware that wounded troops at Walter Reed hospital are not given any LD phone service while recuperating.

Because of this there are guys facing the holidays back in the US but unable to afford calling home. Hey you have to have some priorities, and we know that this administration's tax cuts for the wealthy just don't allow for this type of thing!

Pre-paid, long-distance phone cards are the NUMBER ONE requested item on the soldiers' wish list. Remember the recruiters from F-9/11; a lot of these guys are from families that don't have a lot of extra money, so they are rationing their calls home.

If you would like to help, just purchase a phone card in any amount, $5 is GREAT!! And send it to:

Medical Family Assistance Center
Walter Reed Medical Center
6900 Georgia Avenue, NW
Building 2, Third Floor, Room 3E01
Washington, DC 20307-5001

I wrote a little note on mine in magic marker saying "with appreciation, holiday wishes from democraticunderground.com phone card drive." Let them see who's really supporting the troops. Believe me all those flag-wavers are not gonna do it. So if your family can afford to take part in this, it would be definitely appreciated by the families who are paying the dearest price for AWol's little adventure.

My daughters are also collecting spare lunch money change and sending phone cards from their respective schools and getting the $20 phone cards from Costco that have 670 minutes on them. If you can put this address in your church bulletins, community boards, or other internet forums, I have been assured it's impossible for them to get too many of these phone cards.

They used 55,000 minutes of donated time just last month - and needed more. God knows with GWB spending his "political capital," we can expect more arrivals.

Thanks for everyone willing to help with this!

1. Great idea!
These victims of the Bush warmongering deserve our support, as do the innocent Iraqis injured in this tragic war.

2. I'm hoping I can e-mail this to everyone on the campus where I work.
Not sure if it's appropriate for campus e-mail, but am trying. Such a great idea. Thanks for the heads up.

3. What a great stocking stuffer idea (donation in your name)!
I plan to buy "soldier phone cards" for each family member and place a card in each stocking that reads:

A phone card donated in your name will enable a wounded soldier to phone home this holiday season.

Or some such sentiment.

12. In My Experience, It's the Peace Activists Who Most
support the troops, concrete support instead of with just a lot of hot air. I'm passing this along to Neighbors For Peach and Justice as well.

One of our DU posters called Reed for info & verification -- the thing that appalled me was that therapuetic pillows for amputees were on their wish list.

I like the idea of the phone card drive because it is such an easy, painless way to make a difference but it just galls me that these guys aren't getting any kind of PILLOW they want!! So if you would also like to contact your rep & complain about that...I did!
