Poll question: How many of us are still thinking about LEAVING THIS COUNTRY or never did? |
|
Most of us are deeply distressed at the direction this country is going. Many of us no longer feel at home here. Some seem to feel this is a rather permanent turn of events and others seem to feel that a pendulum swung so far away will eventually come back in our direction.
What we have here is a basic fight or flight reflex I think. An ugly stupid thug (insert here any republican) has just jumped out from behind the dumpster at us and his smelly drunken drool and baseball bat are totally messing up our feng shui. Worse yet, half of the neighborhood is on HIS side. This situation totally sucks.

1. Those of you who have researched countries, what have you come up with? |
|
I know Canada is VERY hard to immigrate to. An acquaintance is married to a Canadian for 2 years and has joint ownership of some property there and she's still waiting.

3. I've already begun. I will put the house for sale in April, and it should |
|
sell very quickly.
I'm laying out the plans for selling the cars, and checking into storing and shipping some household items, but by and large I've decided to sell most everything and make a clean break.
So far, northern Italy is the most appealing. We can leave immediately upon school finishing, and spend the summer moving around Italy and France and deciding what makes us most comfortable.
It seems that an internet cafe would be a really viable little business to have, so for the next few months I'll be doing the research on what the newest technology is and how to make it work wherever we end up.
We can take our smallest dog Winky, and Blue is too old to really move so far, and our family friend has gladly agreed to take her; our other closest and dearest friend has been in love with our middle dog Joey forever, and he adores her and her dog Jack.
I will make arrangements for a mail forwarding service at a post office shop I suppose... keep my bank accounts... I don't know. I suppose as things come up I can handle them. I've found several international health insurance cos.
If anyone has other ideas or suggestions, I'm WIDE open!
I am not compelled to stay here. We have no family, our country is in shambles and our quality of life will be so much better in Italy.

6. I have been sorta flamed here |

for bringing up the possibility that this country, or part of it, could be in the process of becoming a sort of "modern" nazi-like nation. If I see surveillance, control, discrimination, violence, propaganda, generalized stupidity and the like go over a certain level where I live, I will indeed leave rather than lose my job, be investigated, or surrounded, by witch hunters and live a generally unhappy and restricted life. I'll do like these many people who were wise enough to leave Germany between 33 and 38.

9. When the draft is established we will be sending our children |
|
out of the country at a minimum. Our oldest will soon be 18 and could take care of the younger one.

Otherwise I'm not sure if we would be considering a move or not. I can't really say because the preservation of your children overrides all other considerations I think.

14. I did think about that too, and it's too late to edit |
|
But I decided anyone who really.......... REALLY wanted to leave could probably find a way to scrimp, save, raise and sell their way to another country. Just depends on how much one is willing to give up most of the time. Not EVERY time, but most of it.

and they will not go away easily and quietly. Protesting does nothing, and our votes are meaningless. I'm leaving the U.S. My plan is for immigration to Canada in 2007. Next year, I plan on paying off ALL of my remaining debts, and then I will apply for Canadian citizenship. I turned 40 this year, and I just can't grow old in a Christian fascist state.

Through absolute dumb luck, my father was born in the UK so I have dual citizenship. I'm in the process of getting my passport. However, I have no intention on leaving unless I have little choice in the matter.
Interesting side note. Some Canadian immigration folks have hinted to the possibility that LGBT americans might qualify for refugee status.
